SYRACUSE - Col. Steven C. Dodds Ret., 65, of Syracuse, died at 3:30 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008, in University Park Health & Rehabilitation, Fort Wayne, after a 2-1/2-year battle with brain cancer.

He was born Jan. 20, 1943, in Kendallville, to Horton C. and Lois Green Dodds. On Oct. 30, 1980, he married Kellie Ryan, who survives.

He also lived in Germany, New York, Okinawa, Puerto Rico, Maryland, Florida, Virginia, Michigan and Georgia. He retired as colonel in the U.S. Army after 26 years, serving in the infantry in Vietnam. He received the Soldier's Medal, awarded for valor during peacetime. He worked at Todd Realty and was a member of American Legion 253, North Webster. He graduated from Antilies High School, Puerto Rico, in 1961; attended Syracuse Schools; and earned a bachelor's degree from Inter-American University, Puerto Rico. He volunteered for the Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund for more than 15 years.

Also surviving are his mother, Lois Dodds, Cromwell; two daughters, Rebecca Dodds, Fort Wayne, and Jennifer Ryan Fox, Boston, Mass.; a son, Christopher Dodds, Fort Wayne; five grandchildren; and a brother, Don (and spouse Rita) Dodds, Ligonier.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse, with LTC Chaplain Tom Batsky Ret. officiating, and with military services.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.
