He was born in Etna Green, to Paul J. and Althea Iden Hamlin. His wife of 68 years, Dora B. Hamlin, survives.
He was a career U.S. Army officer in the Quartermaster Corps. He graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1943, with a business degree from Kelley School of Business. He received his commission that same year. He obtained a master’s degree at Ohio State in 1949. He attended the Naval War College, Newport, R.I., and the Army War College, Carlisle, Pa. He was battalion commander in Korean, where he built an orphanage and area commander in Vietnam. His tours of duty included Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Japan and many years in Washington, D.C. He received many medals and honors during his service. In 1969, he retired from the military and began a 16-year career with People’s Drug Stores as vice president in charge of personnel. He was also a real estate investor, starting with his first farm at 19. An accomplished musician, he played first chair trumpet in the Indiana University Marching Hundred Band and was an expert pianist. He and his wife endowed the Jack I. and Dora B Hamlin Chair for Piano at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
Also surviving is a daughter, Daura Christopher Hamlin, DDS.
Burial will be private at Arlington Cemetery.
