INDIANAPOLIS – U.S. Senators Dan Coats (R) and Joe Donnelly (D) and U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman were recently recognized by the Indiana Statewide Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives as a “Friend of Indiana’s Electric Cooperatives.”
Coats, Donnelly and Stutzman, along with several other members of Indiana’s congressional delegation, received this honor for their leadership and support of the issues and policies important to Indiana’s electric cooperatives.
“Indiana’s electric cooperatives are grateful to count (these three) as strong friends and allies,” Scott Bowers, vice president of government relations for the Indiana Statewide Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives, is quoted as saying in the announcement. “Whether seeking support on key votes or assistance with federal agencies, they consistently step forward in a bipartisan way to lend a helping hand. This award is one way of expressing our appreciation and acknowledging (their) impact on the 1.3 million Hoosiers we serve.”
The “Friends of Indiana’s Electric Cooperatives” award was unveiled this year to recognize members of Indiana’s congressional delegation who have consistently supported policies, issues and regulatory reforms important to Indiana’s electric cooperatives and their mission to provide safe, reliable and affordable electricity.
Important votes in support of the Coal Ash Bill, H.R. 2218, the Farm Bill, S. 954 and H.R. 2642 and the REINS Act, H.R. 367, coupled with the congressional representatives’ willingness to engage various federal regulatory agencies on behalf of electric cooperatives were some of the considerations for this honor in 2013.
“The safe and affordable energy provided by Indiana’s electric cooperatives is vitally important to Hoosier families and businesses,” Coats is quoted as saying. “I am honored to receive this award, and I will continue to support the efforts of Indiana’s electric cooperatives to provide cost-effective, reliable electricity.”
Donnelly also shared his thoughts in receiving this recognition.
“Indiana’s electric cooperatives provide more than a million Hoosiers with reliable, affordable electricity,”  Donnelly said.
“I am grateful to receive this honor, and I look forward to continuing to work with Indiana’s rural electric cooperatives on bipartisan efforts to make sure they are able to provide affordable, reliable energy long into the future.”
Indiana’s third congressional district, which Stutzman currently represents, includes more than 205,000 electric cooperative member-owners, who are served by nine electric distribution cooperatives.
“While Hoosier families fight an uphill battle to make ends meet, the increasing cost of Washington’s red tape is passed on in higher monthly utility bills,” said Stutzman. “The Indiana Statewide Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives is working to lower energy costs for families and small businesses, and I’m proud to partner with them in their great work. Hoosiers understand that the solution can’t be bigger government but an all-of-the-above energy plan that harnesses the potential of electric power.”
Other members of Indiana’s congressional delegation  receiving this recognition include: Rep. Jackie Walorski, (R-02), Rep. Susan Brooks, (R-05), Rep. Luke Messer, R-06, Rep. Larry Bucshon, (R-08) and Rep. Todd Young, (R-09.)
