BOURBON - Mike McBride said he was as surprised as anyone that the Triton School Board decided to suspend him from his varsity basketball head coaching duties for the rest of the season during Monday night's school board meeting.

"I wasn't aware it was going to happen. The only thing I knew, there would be a discussion," said McBride. "I didn't know there was going to be a vote at the public meeting."

McBride wasn't present at the school board meeting nor did he have any representation. He was notified of the school board's decision last night by Triton High School principal Mike Chobanov.

The board voted unanimously to suspend McBride and replace him with junior varsity head coach Jason Groves and McBride believes he won't be returning to the Triton bench.

"I was under the impression I've been relieved of my coaching duties," said McBride.

McBride, an elementary school teacher in the Triton school system, plans to continue his teaching duties.

"As of right now, I plan on continuing to teach here next year," said McBride, adding he is open to coaching opportunities elsewhere should he be officially released from his coaching duties at Triton.

Triton athletic director Mike Byron said that he was only aware that McBride was suspended for the remainder of the season and that no steps had been taken in replacing McBride on a permanent basis.

"We're concentrating on just finishing this season and we're just going to keep moving on," said Byron.

In his fourth year as head coach at Triton, McBride has compiled a 36-49 record. The Trojans won a sectional in 2003, McBride's second year, but fell in the sectional final at home to Argos last year, 64-61.

A motion was brought before the school board last year to remove McBride as head coach with no formal action taken.

This year, Triton has a 3-14 record with three regular season games remaining. The Trojans are on pace to have their worst record since the '93-'94 season

"I think the fact that we're not winning has something to do with this decision," said McBride.

McBride is a 1991 Triton High School graduate and played at Bethel College. He was an assistant at Northridge and Carmel before taking over at Triton for Joe Bennett in 2001.

A letter signed by 10 members of the basketball team, asked the school board to remove McBride. Several players and parents spoke during Monday's meeting of verbal abuse.

Despite the allegations, McBride remains resolute.

"The people who know me are going to know this isn't true," said McBride.

The Trojans are in action tonight as they host Rochester with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff in Groves first game as interim head coach.

Attempts to contact Chobanov and members of the school board were unsuccessful. [[In-content Ad]]
