He was born July 27, 1935, to Elmer E. and Ruth I. Sarber Leiter. On Dec. 27, 1955, he married Evelyn L. Haas, who survives.
He spent his adult life in Bourbon and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years. He then restored and rented homes in the area. He was devoted to his community. He was active in the Bourbon Jaycees and coached Little League. He helped found the Bourbon Investment Club. He was a volunteer probation officer and was active with the Boy Scouts. He spent several years an an EMT. He served on advisory committees for the Bourbon Library and the Triton School Corp. for several years. Recently, he served as president of the Bourbon Alumni; was on the Mission Moments Committee of First United Methodist Church; and was a current member of Bourbon Lions Club. After retirement he and his wife were able to travel extensively and have spent their last several winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. He also hiked the Appalachian Trail. He was a devoted family man, active with his children and then his grandchildren, attending all of their activities and programs. He loved watching sports, reading, investing, golfing and fishing with his friends. He also enjoyed his daily visits to the coffee shop. He was much loved and will be missed.
Also surviving are a brother, Dale L. (and spouse Suzanne) Leiter; a son, Michael Jay (and spouse Karol Hemig) Leiter; a daughter, Terri Lynne Leiter (and spouse Lynn) Klotz; and four grandchildren, Adam Michael and Travis Riley Klotz and Cameron Jay "CJ" and Ethan Joseph Leiter.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Bourbon.
Calling is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, Bourbon.
