CLAYPOOL - The town has received a Community Focus Fund grant of $130,000 that will be used to repair a water storage tank and well pump, replace water lines and purchase a new generator and alarm system, the town council announced Monday.

A 10 percent match is required from the town.

The CFF program is administered by the Indiana Department of Commerce and is part of the federally-funded Community Development Block Grant program.

Eligible projects include infrastructure improvements, child care facilities, senior and community centers, downtown revitalization and fire stations and fire trucks.

Board member Duane Allen tendered his resignation from the council effective July 1. Personal reasons were cited. He also resigned from the fire department and his position as chief. Larry Neher was named the new chief.

Allen was entering his fifth year as a council member and had volunteered for the Clay Township Fire Department for a decade.

Mark Jesse of the Bonar Group, Fort Wayne, was present to discuss his company's services in developing a storm water master plan and the requirements for obtaining a planning grant.

Town manager Gene Warner said the system is "ancient" and it all needs to be replaced.

The town has standing water on the streets after any significant rain.

Board president Don Miller said the county drain going through town is not handling all the storm water and any plan the town develops will be contingent on the county's willingness to upgrade.

Tim Hill, of Peerless-Midwest, Mishawaka, attended the meeting to discuss his company's well head protection plan services.

Architect Paul Spite told the board an architect isn't necessary for buildings under 30,000 cubic feet.

He was referring to the town's plans for a vehicle garage, which Groves Construction will build.

Spite said he would be available to look over any drawings before they are sent to the state.

Town board members are Don Miller, Niki Lincoln and Duane Allen. The board meets the third Monday of each month in the fire station. [[In-content Ad]]
