He was born May 15, 1920, in Akron, Ohio, to Clarice M. and Goldie E. Killian Mitchell, who preceded him in death. After graduation, he married Martha McCoy, who preceded him in death. The couple had two children. On Sept. 6, 2000, he married Elsie Saksa, who survives in Warsaw.
He graduated from Columbia City High School. He spent two years in the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Louisville during the Pacific campaign. During his service he was awarded 10 service medals and while on board the heavy cruiser witnessed one of three kamikaze strikes to hit the ship during the war. He achieved the rank of petty officer second class. Following the war, he worked as a welder and a molder in LaPorte and eventually worked for Dana Corp., retiring after 30 years.
He was member of Oak Grove Church of God, American Legion Post #98, VFW #5582 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge #1906. It was not uncommon to see him on the harmonica or guitar while playing in a three-piece entertainment band in the Columbia City area for years.
Also surviving are his children, Roger Mitchell, Lake City, Fla., and Carol (and spouse Mike) Fahl, Columbia City; four step-children; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Sheri Mitchell; a brother, Walter Mitchell; two sisters, Naomi Trier and Ethel Nicodemus; and a granddaughter, Lisa Nichole Mitchell.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, with Pastors Steve Johnson and Denny Bollenbacher officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Compton Cemetery.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
