City To Demolish Property For Parking

Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety heard a property on Center Street will be demolished to increase parking capacity for a new city hall.

The board reviewed a letter from Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins during Friday’s meeting.

The letter was to Ben Butz, Bentz Salon and Spa, 117 Center St., Suite B, Warsaw.

The letter said in conjunction with the city renovating the former National City Bank building as the new city hall, the city will demolish the building at 117 Center St. to increase capacity of the parking lot.

The letter also stated in regard to the business’s retail lease agreement signed Oct. 1 with former landlord Jay Maish, Warsaw releases the business from fulfilling the term of the lease.

The business may terminate the lease and vacate the premises at which time they acquire a new location for their business.

Once Warsaw has determined that all rent and utility charges are paid in full and the premises have been vacated and surrendered without damage or destruction, the business’s security deposit of $700 will be returned to the business without interest.

The board also approved a $5,000 contract between the city and Scearce-Rudisel Architects for additional services for the demolition drawings for the single-story building at 117 Center St. to the west of the parking lot on the site of the proposed new city hall.

The additional services include design and construction drawings, specifications and bid process to demolish the single-story building, creating additional parking, reviewing site drainage, revising the parking lot lighting and layout, and creating a plaza design with landscaping and paving.

The board approved Joseph Fretz being promoted from Warsaw Fire Department shift captain to the department's fire inspector. Fretz replaces former fire inspector Mike Wilson, who retired May 31. Fretz’s duties as fire inspector began June 12 and his bi-weekly salary is $1,936.30.

The board also approved Dave Vercauteren’s voluntary resignation from WFD lieutenant to firefighter effective June 26. Vercauteren’s bi-weekly salary is $1,823.58.

The board also approved a $3,000 contract for Ashley Gearing as the opening act for Warsaw Parks Department’s country music concert July 22 in Central Park.

The board also approved a contract between the city and Pro-Form Pipe Lining for $90,155 for storm sewer repair on Park Avenue; a $77,805 contract between the city and Pro-Form Pipe Lining for storm sewer repair at the railroad crossing behind Penguin Point on Detroit Street; a $53,105 contract between the city and Pro Form Pipe Lining for storm sewer repair on Clark Street; and a $21,612.50 contract with Pro Form Pipe Lining for storm sewer repair at the Ind. 15 crossing.

The board also approved a request from Chuck Friese, TNT Fireworks area manager, allowing the company to pay an itinerant merchant and peddler fee of $25 for the person that operates the business’s fireworks stand.

The board approved Warsaw Police Department renewing its CenturyLink service agreement with a new 36-month service agreement.

The board also:[[In-content Ad]]- Approved releasing liens for properties at 1512 E. Center St. and 1420 E. Jefferson St.

- Approved an invoice from the city to Indiana Department of Transportation for the Parker Street and Argonne Road intersection improvements of which Warsaw is responsible for paying 20 percent of the initial $139.14 invoice.

- Approved the city issuing a letter of credit for $100,000 each for fiber optic projects to protect the city from any damages that may occur during the fiber optic construction at Leiter Drive, Helper Drive to Prairie Street and Parker Street, Patterson Road, Normandy Drive and CR 175E.
