City OKs Grant Request For Repair Of Boat Ramp

The Warsaw Board of Works approved a grant application request from the Warsaw Parks Board today.
The grant would be for work to be done on the Winona Lake boat ramp area.
Jon Garber, Warsaw parks superintendent, told the board that, if approved, the $50,000 grant would be used to improve a seawall around the boat ramp and provide additional parking.
"The DNR is upgrading the boat ramp and they approached us about providing additional parking," he said. "They are the ones that told us about the grant."
He said people using the boat ramp are now parking on private land adjacent to the lake access point.
Jeff Noffsinger, Warsaw city planner, is handling the grant application for the parks department. He said the grant would require a 25 percent match from the city, or $12,500.
"We're looking at acquiring the adjacent land and constructing the additional parking there," he said.
Board member Jerry Patterson said he would support the grant application and the construction of the additional parking spaces, in light of the improvements already planned for the site.
"I would support it because it's something that needs to be done, especially if people are parking on private property," he said.
In other business, the board approved a settlement of $30,800 with Burcott Construction in a dispute over a 1995 sewer project the contractor participated in.
"The were basically late in completing the work they were contracted for, so we held back those funds," said Mayor Ernie Wiggins. "We decided that it's better to settle with them (Burcott) than to take the case to court and incur the legal expenses for doing so."
The board also approved a proposal from Dr. David Masterson to provide free back care seminars for employees of the street department. [[In-content Ad]]
