Warsaw City Council Monday approved $15,000 in additional funding for Warsaw Community Development Corp.'s facade matching grant program.

The council reviewed a letter from WCDC President Cindy Dobbins for the funding request.

Dobbins stated in the letter it is her understanding that the allocation for the 2009 grant period that began April 1 is $10,000.[[In-content Ad]]"Due to the fact that the WCDC still anticipates requests for several major renovation projects in 2009, we would like to respectfully request that the mayor and city council reconsider the 2009 grant fund allocation," Dobbins wrote.

Some of the downtown projects planned for 2009 include a major renovation to the Oddfellow Building located on the northwest corner of Buffalo and Market streets, and exterior renovations to ground-floor properties at 101 and 103 E. Center St.

A potential buyer for the former license branch property at 123 W. Center St. also has expressed interest in matching grant funds, Dobbins said.

Dobbins requested the city reconsider its 2009 grant funding allocation.

Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins said the city's workman's compensation premium will be less this year, but could be used to provide the $15,000 in funding for WCDC.

Councilman Kyle Babcock said he supported providing additional funding to WCDC.

"I'm in complete agreement that we should provide additional funding to WCDC. Anything we can do to make the downtown more vibrant and keep it going I think we should do," Babcock said.
