Warsaw City Council approved an ordinance to vacate a public way on White Industrial Drive Monday night.
Mike Lewis, Lewis Salvage owner, requested the vacation that will provide ingress and egress to his property and the property directly north, represented by Kim Cox.
Currently the city does very little to maintain that portion of the road as it is more an entrance into the Lewis Salvage operation and Cox property to the north, according to Jeremy Skinner, city planner.
Councilman Charlie Smith made the motion for the vacation seconded by councilman Jerry Frush.
Lewis said one of the reasons for the land vacation is security.
“We’ve had some problems on the north side of our property with people going on our property,” Lewis said.
Lewis said the Salvage Company moved to its location in 1984.
“At that time we had 50 to 75 people coming and going with scrap material, but today we have days where there are 300 to 350,” Lewis said.
Lewis said the business has grown a lot and the public way vacation will help things flow at the business better.
Lewis said 23 acres of the property is currently fenced in the city limits.
He said there is not currently fencing on the property between Lewis Salvage and the Cox property but that it will be fenced.
