The park that will be named Krebs Trailhead Park will be at the intersection of East Market and McKinley streets.
It is north of the Gatke property at an old abandoned railroad corridor.
The park will connect expanding recreational assets such as the Greenway for bicyclists and pedestrians, said Staci Young, Warsaw and Winona Lake Ride and Walk advisory committee chair.
The idea is to connect Winona’s Heritage Trail and Warsaw’s Chinworth Trail.
Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety during its meeting Friday approved a property donation for the trailhead park. The property was donated by Eddie and Anita Krebs.
Jeff Grose, board member, made the motion to accept the property donation, seconded by Charlie Smith.
The board also approved accepting a $50,000 donation from OrthoWorx that will be used for the trailhead park construction.
Kosciusko County Convention and Visitors Commission has proposed to provide $20,000 to install a restroom facility at the trailhead park.
Board of Works will need to approve the KCCVC donation agreement at its Oct. 5 meeting.
The Ride and Walk Warsaw and Winona Lake Advisory Committee has worked to plan the trailhead park that will connect Warsaw and Winona Lake, Young said.
The committee is working on its master plan for bicycling and walking that will be completed by the end of this year.
The park will provide new paths as well as restrooms, trailhead information, benches, picnic tables, bike parking and open space.
The design details include trail information centers with maps detailing city and county destinations.
Information centers at the trailhead will include historical information about the interurban rail line that used to run through the area.
Decorative lighting modeled after antique train station lamps also will be a part of the trailhead park.
NIPSCO also has agreedto provide landscaping and tree donations.
Brad Bishop, OrthoWorx executive director, attended Friday’s meeting to speak about the organization’s financial donation.
He said OrthoWorx is excited to support the trailhead park.
Bishop said as OrthoWorx was thinking about its community enhancement initiative research was done on recreation.
“Outdoor recreation came up very highly in things that we can get behind as an organization,” Bishop said.
“People place a lot of value on the existing Greenway system but there has been a sense if we could knit the system and recreation together and expand it we really would have something.”
Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer thanked OrthoWorx for their financial contribution.
He also thanked the Krebs for the property donation, and the Bike and Walk advisory committee and building and planning department for their work on the project.
“This will be a big project to get a lot of work done that we have started and certainly OrthoWorx’s help and support is invaluable,” Thallemer said. “This is an exciting time for pedestrian and bike trails in the community.”
He said the city is striking while the iron is hot on the project and the community is excited about the project.
