Cinderella Squires Capture Wabash Sectional Title

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By JEN GIBSON, Times-Union Sports Editor-

WABASH -ÊCinderella has stepped into the glass slipper in North Manchester.

The 10-16 Manchester baseball team is living a fairy tale after topping the Wabash Apaches 6-3 to win the Wabash Sectional Saturday afternoon.

"I think we had some nerves early," said Manchester coach Jack Rupley. This is the first time since 1995 we have even played in the sectional final. But I told the kids that this was just another game. It was a nice warm day and we went out there to have some fun."

And Manchester's prince turned out to be senior Brent Westendorf, whose three-run blast over the right-field fence put the Squires up 4-3 in the third.

Manchester trailed 3-1 going into the third frame, but the Apache lead did not last long. In the bottom of the inning, Anothony Sorg reached base on a walk and Drew Walters reached base on a single down the third-base line. Sorg was thrown out on a fielder's choice hit by Josh Staton, but the out did not hurt for long.

Westendorf stepped to the plate and hammered a three-run shot over the right-field fence to put the Squires up 4-3 and change the momentum of the ball game.

After holding the Wabash team scoreless in the top of the fourth, Manchester added some insurance runs of its own. Adam Young and Tyler Kelsey crossed the plate to score for the Squires in the fourth and build a 6-3 advantage.

That was all junior pitcher Todd Dale needed. He pitched three more scoreless innings and earned the win on the mound for the Squires. Dale allowed five hits, struck out three batters, and walked on batter in his seven-inning outing.

"Todd did a very good job on the mound," said Rupley. "He didn't let little things bother him. We made a few mistakes out there, but he just kept going."

Westendorf was the star of the day, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Jediah Carandante, Sorg, Walters and Young had one hit each for the Squires.

Manchester had the worst record going into the sectional but put together three straight solid games to earn the school's first sectional title since 1995. The Squires now move on to the Jimtown Regional where they will play Fairfield at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Warsaw Baseball Season Ends In Sectional Final

By Jen Gibson, Times-Union Sports Editor

FORT WAYNE -ÊIt wasn't quite the way Warsaw wanted to end the season.

The Tigers baseball team advanced to the sectional final game against DeKalb, but fell to the Barons 5-3 in Saturday night's sectional final at Carroll High School.

"Tonight we played a very good team," said Warsaw coach Will Shepherd. "DeKalb is a very good team and they will represent this sectional well. Our kids played hard, but DeKalb took advantage of our mistakes and picked up the win."

DeKalb took the lead early, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. However, Warsaw fought back in the bottom of the inning to score a run of its own.

The Tigers took advantage of a John Milton double in the third frame to score another run and take a 2-1 lead.

That lead lasted until the fifth inning when DeKalb capitialized on two Tiger errors to score two runs and take a 3-2 advantage.

After holding Warsaw scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, the Barons turned three hits into two runs in the top of the sixth frame to extend their lead to 5-2.

But Warsaw kept plugging away. The Tigers went into the bottom of the seventh inning trailing by three runs. Pinch-hitter Jacob Wilson and centerfielder Brandon LaFollette each walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Then a two-out single by Milton scored Wilson.

However, that was as close as the Tigers got when the last batter flied out to left field to end the game.

Milton led the Tigers with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. He scored one run and had an RBI. Zack Smith, William Knepper, Geoff Walmer and LaFollette added one hit each for the Warsaw squad.

Warsaw defeated Carroll in the morning sectional semifinal game to advance to the game against DeKalb.

Warsaw ends the season at 21-10, while 23-6 DeKalb moves on to play Snider in the Kokomo Regional Saturday.

Wawasee Golfers Capture Sectional Title

By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer

There's no shame, Warsaw boys golf coach Bob Turner says, in losing the sectional championship to county and conference rival Wawasee.

Turner, in his 14th and final season with the Tigers, says Wawasee reminds him a lot of Warsaw a year ago.

"Wawasee has got a good golf team," Turner said. "They're a lot like we were last year. They're on a roll right now. We're close to being on a roll, the good news is we get out. We'll take a 306, that's a pretty good score."

The 11th-ranked Tigers took second with a 306 in Saturday's 13-team sectional at Rozella Ford, a score Turner said would win most days. Wawasee, which finished the regular season ranked ninth and undefeated at 18-0 for the first time in school history, won with a 300. The sectional championship, which ended Warsaw's streak at six, was the first for Wawasee since 1984.

"The kids played great golf today," Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone said. "To shoot a 300 here and beat a program like Warsaw is a good thing. Our kids have worked really hard. Bob (Turner) has great kids and he's a great coach. Things just fell our way. A lot of that has to do with what day it is. We just caught them on a couple good days."

The top three teams and the top three individuals not on an advancing team will play Saturday in the regional at Chestnut Hills in Fort Wayne. Joining Warsaw and Wawasee in the team competition will be Culver Military Academy, which took third with a 317. Advancing in the individual competition is Plymouth's Adam Gifford, who shot 71 and beat Wawasee's Stephen Conrad in a playoff hole for medalist honors, Bremen's Shawn McCormick (74) and Manchester's Joey Zapf (77).

Taking fourth Saturday as a team was Plymouth with a 323, followed by Manchester (335), Southwood (345), Northfield (350), Triton (355), Wabash (355), Bremen (357), Tippecanoe Valley (358), Argos (360) and Culver Community (408).

On a day temperatures soared into the 90s, Wawasee was cool under fire.

Conrad finished the day with a 71, while classmate Evan Gerard fired a 73. Joel Bickel and Eric Andrews shot 78s, and Josh Abrams finished with an 80.

"Evan came through big time for us today," Coverstone said. "He was one that I was a little worried about, but he came through for us."

Leading the way for the all-senior Warsaw team, which has advanced to the regional in 13 of Turner's 14 years, was David Slater with an 82. Matt Osbeck shot 76, while Aaron Turner shot 78, Adam Johnson 80 and Greg Clay 83.

"We would have liked to win, but we get to play next week," Turner said. "You can always second guess yourself, but a 306 is something we can be proud of. We always play well at Chestnut Hills. We're used to playing target golf, it fits our style of play. I think we're gonna be successful next week. Kosciusko County and the NLC should be well represented at the regional."

Warsaw and Wawasee played Chestnut Hills on May 4, with the Tigers taking first with a 311 and the Warriors taking fifth with a 328.

"I hope we both get to advance to state," Coverstone said. "I think the world of Bob (Turner) and his program. Chestnut Hills is a course you have to hit straight on. There's courses that fit your style, and this hasn't been one that has fit us."
