Hood previously announced he resigned from the council to take a job in Florida. Hood’s duties ended April 30.
Christos’ duties on the council were effective Monday, and he will serve until December 2015.
Randy Girod, Kosciusko County Republican chairman, thanked Hood for his service to the town. He also thanked Christos and David Phelps for seeking the position and said they were both qualified candidates.
Precinct committee members Karen Wildman, Janice Workman, Mark Nunez and Ruth Una Paige voted three times in a paper ballot format. Jerry Nelson and Steve Foster served as vote counters. All three times there were tied votes. Girod broke the tie and elected Christos to the seat.
Christos said he is honored and excited to serve on the council. Christos joins Council President Bruce Shaffner and councilmen Greg Winn, Randy Swanson and Terry Howie.
“I think we have a wonderful town council and look forward to working with them,” Christos said.
Each candidate was allowed three minutes to speak about why they felt they were the best candidate for the position.
Christos spoke about his experiences in the community over the last 15 years, and what he felt is important for the town’s future.
He was born and raised in Chicago and went to Depaul University where he graduated with a degree in accountancy, and passed the Certified Public Accounting exam.
When he graduated he was offered a job in governmental accounting in Chicago, and then he started the Boathouse Restaurant in Winona Lake.
He purchased his home on Terrace Drive where he lived for 12 years, married Stavrani in 2006 and has a son, Spiros, with one child on the way.
He said he recalls moving to Winona Lake from Chicago, and within a couple of months he knew everyone on the street.
“I remember thinking early on I lived in the same home in Chicago for 20 some years and did not know my neighbors as well as I know my current neighbors,” Christos said.
He spoke about the town’s future.
“I believe that we need to continue to make decisions that support the goal of making our community more and more family-friendly,” Christos said.
He said the demand for housing is high in the town and he would like to take steps to strengthen that housing demand.
“I believe in a common sense and reasonable approach in making decisions,” Christos said. “I also believe in transparency and that the product of two individuals is better than one, and the product of three is better than two, and so on.”
He said he believes it is very important that maintaining trust and diplomatic relations among town employees, fellow council members and constituents is important as well.[[In-content Ad]]
