Chimp's Giving Away Comic Books Saturday

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Run, don't walk, to Chimp's Comix Saturday for free comic books.

Yes, that's right. FREE comic books.

Chimp's Comix, 919 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, is once again participating in the national seventh annual Free Comic Book Day. Nick Kelley, store owner, said the comics will be given away Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Each person who walks into the store can select two free comics. For each non-perishable food item a person brings in, they can select an additional free comic. The non-perishable food item will be donated to the Salvation Army.[[In-content Ad]]There are 43 comics to choose from this year, up from 30 last year, Kelley said. In 2007, Kelley said, they ran out of kids titles fast, so they upped the order of those this year. Of the 43 titles to choose from this year, 13 are all-ages titles, up from five in 2007.

Titles this year include a comic with Iron Man, Spider-Man and the Hulk in one; X-Men with a story written just for Free Comic Day; a Superman comic that was nominated for an Eisner Award; Gumby; Jughead; and Hellboy, among others.

"Essentially," said Kelley, "quite a few options."

Kelley said 600 comics were handed out for free in 2007. This year, Chimp's Comix will have 1,000 to give out.

With the increase of selection and more copies to give out, Kelley said they also hope to get more non-perishable food items to give to the Salvation Army.

Also on Saturday, Kelley said there will be special announcements and contests. But they're a secret until Saturday's event.

The store also will have a huge storewide sale. Magic the Gathering packs and boxes will be discounted, and comic book back issues will be half off.

Normal business hours for Chimp's Comix are 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays; 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays; and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays. Closed Sundays.

The business telephone number is 574-268-2274.
