Highlights of the selection, according to Chimp’s owner Nick Kelley, include two The Avengers comics, two Spider-Man, three D.C. cartoon-related comics, one D.C. New 52, Transformers, Donald Duck, Sonic the Hedgehog, Smurfs & Tinkerbell in a flip book, Mega Man, season nine of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Spongebob Square Pants and a flip book of Adventure Time and Peanuts.
Of the 50 comics, 11 are back from past years, 39 are new and at least 14 are kid oriented.
“The Avengers is big, and the D.C. New 52 is going to be a big one as well,” Kelley said.
Each person can get two free comics. For each additional free comic, a person must donate one non-perishable food item that will be given to the Salvation Army.
“One food item equals one comic,” Kelley said. “It really helps Salvation Army a lot.”
Last year, more than 800 food items were collected.
Free Comic Book Day is from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Chimp’s Comix, 919 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw.
This is the ninth year Chimp’s has participated in Free Comic Book Day.
Besides the free comics, Chimp’s will have a huge sale.
Comics will be 40 percent off back issues, 40 percent off comic sets and complete runs, 40 percent off signed comics and 20 percent off graphic novels.
There will be a discount comic bin and miscellaneous other sales.
Every $10 a customer spends gets them entered into a raffle to win a standup of Jack Nicholson as The Joker from Batman.
Chimp’s also will be marking its 20th anniversary this year.
On July 21, the business will have a 20th anniversary party and sale day.
