SOUTH WHITLEY - Charlie Layne, 82, of South Whitley, died at 8:30 p.m. May 7, 2007, in The Oaks Living Center, Columbia City.

He was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Floyd County, Ky., to William Taylor and Martha Hale Layne. In September 1950, he married Hancford Louise Stephens, who survives.

He graduated from Martin High School in 1944, and served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 27, 1949, to Sept. 19, 1949. They moved to South Whitley from Martin, Ky., in 1967. He worked at Stephens Elkhorn Coal Mining Co. for 9-1/2 years, and Gripco Fasteners for 17 years, retiring in 1987. He attended First Baptist Church, was the former union secretary/treasurer for United Mine Workers, and played semi-pro baseball for the Beaver Creek league.

Also surviving are two children, Mrs. Terry (Priscilla) Brandenburg and Charles Colin Layne, both of South Whitley; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters: Georgia Layne, Martin; Imogene Miller, Burket; and Hazel Firesheets, Louisiana; and a brother, Burt Layne, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, South Whitley, with the Rev. Steve Schueren officiating. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.

Calling is from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the church.

Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Miller Chapel, South Whitley, is in charge of arrangements.
