He was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Warsaw, to Thomas C. and Kathryn Rickel Judd. On April 15, 1945, in Denver, Colo., he married Patricia Guthrie, who died in 1991. He then married Jacqueline “Jackie” Groninger, in Goshen, Nov. 27, 1992, who survives.
Raised in Akron, he graduated from Akron High School and attended Indiana University before enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served as a weatherman in the U.S. Army Air Corps. While stationed in Colorado, he met his first wife Patricia. His military service ended in 1946 on the south Pacific island of Guam. After the war, he went back to school and graduated in 1949 from the Butler School of Pharmacy, Indianapolis. After graduation he went to work with his uncle, Chic Judd, in Elkhart, at the original Judd Drug Store. In 1956 he moved to Goshen to open and manage Judd Drugs. He later became president of the company. He loved the drug store business, whether filling prescriptions, meeting and greeting customers or running his lunch counter and soda fountain. He retired in 1979 and moved to Rochester, Minn. After Patricia died, he moved back to Goshen and married Jackie. While in Goshen, he served on the first board of directors of Goshen Hospital and was on the original board at Greencroft. He also served on the Home Federal Saving and Loan board of directors.
