Character

Forty-one years ago today (Oct. 26), a Navy pilot was shot down and taken captive by the Communist North Vietnamese and suffered as a POW. We know him today as Senator John McCain.
He has overcome great obstacles to live an exemplary life of service to our country. When I was in the United States Army after Vietnam, we studied McCain and his fellow POWs as to how we should conduct ourselves if we were ever captured. I remember how their story impacted me with their level of moral fiber. McCain would be the first to tell you that his experience in the Hanoi Hilton alone does not make him qualified to be president, however, he has been tested in the toughest of situations.
I hear much about change these days but not character. We have candidates who don't want to protect the unborn and "change" basic American rights such as gun ownership and religious liberty (especially our Judeo-Christian foundation). Discussion moves more toward socialism than the American ideal of personal responsibility and limited government. Politicians are more worried about opinion polls at home and around the world than in being proud to be an American.
The reality is that America is starved for real heroes like John McCain. He served his country during an unpopular war and lost many years of his life in a living hell while others at home cut down our Republic and even plotted to bomb and destroy it. I remember those days when GIs came home in civilian clothes and didn't talk about Vietnam. Today, most are more cordial and supportive of the troops (thank God) even as they rail on the United States for finally doing something about years of attacks by radical Islamic terrorism.
Can we at least thank President George W. Bush, military personnel and law enforcement that we have not been attacked on our soil since Sept. 11th and continue actions that will keep us safe?
Our founding fathers stressed that character should be an important quality we look for when we vote because they will protect our Constitution and put the best interests of America first. When you vote next Tuesday please consider character. Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin. Governor Mitch Daniels. Two men that I have had personal experience with: Mark Souder and Kent Adams. Vote character.
