The Warsaw/Kosciusko County Chamber of Commerce highlighted two area businesses Thursday at its biannual Business Awareness Luncheon.

The focus of the spring gathering was longtime Warsaw-based Hand Industries and the other was a newcomer to the Warsaw area, Herman & Goetz Inc. and its H&G Services.

According to Christine Mills of H&G, the building services firm has been providing contractual service in Michiana since 1968 and have recently opened a satellite office in Warsaw.

"H&G is known as a 'total service' company," Mills said. "Our five divisions brought in $45 million last year providing building services in northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan."

One of H&G's five divisions offers design, installation and maintenance for advanced electronic systems - computer networks, security and fire systems, PBX phone systems, and the like. Another division specializes in commercial food service equipment and refrigeration technology. A third provides complete electrical system and electronics expertise. A fourth offers commercial plumbing service. And, finally, H&G assists municipal water and sewer systems with maintenance and directional boring for "non-dig" line installation.

Hand Industries began operation in 1956, providing precision polishing for the orthopedics industry, according to Jeff Ott.

Recently they expanded their polishing services market to the aircraft and aerospace industries as well, Ott added.

"Hand Industries is perhaps best known for its Dirilyte flatware division.

"What started out as DiraGold, and later changed to Dirilyte, made flatware that was world-renowned," Ott said. "Diralyte flatware has been used at White House state dinners and the Shah of Iran purchased 135 place settings in the 1970s."

In 1982, Dirilyte expanded into the handcrafted award plaques and plates.

"Hand Industries recently received a patent for a process that allows us to print in full color directly onto metal," Ott said.

Hand has also diversified, he added. It owns and operates the Internet service provider, Waveone Internet, and is also involved in the agricultural businesses, raising Highland beef cattle from Scotland.

"These cattle are very unique in that their meat is almost 100 percent fat free," Ott said. [[In-content Ad]]
