FORT WAYNE - Fifth-year Warsaw boys track and field coach Troy Akers described the state tournament as "survive and advance."

Five local runners, four from Warsaw, survived Thursday's Fort Wayne Wayne Regional to advance to the state finals June 1 at IUPUI's Carroll Stadium.

The Tiger foursome of Grady Randall, Adam Sisson, Chris Clay and Brad Seiss took fourth in the 1600 relay with a time of 3:23.45. Warsaw earned its trip to state by making the state qualifying time of 3:23.82, as only the top three individuals or teams in each event advance.

Sisson also advanced in the 400, an event he was seeded fourth in, with his second-place time of 50.50 seconds. Fort Wayne Wayne's Jeremiah Starks nudged Sisson, a junior, with a time of 50.48 seconds.

Wawasee senior Rob Chalfant was the only local runner to take first place, winning the 1600 in a time of 4:20.14.

"We competed very well and were pleased with our performances," Wawasee coach Scott Lancaster said. "Rob ran the game plan as it was laid out by (cross country) Coach [Dave] Stookey. Rob rose to the challenge and came through with a tremendous performance."

Randall, whose time of 39.9 set a school record, finished fourth in the 300 hurdles, and may receive an automatic bid to the state finals based on his time.

"Grady came through with an awesome run in the 300 hurdles, setting a school record 39.9 seconds," Akers said. "What they do now is take the next three fastest times in the whole state and they go to state."

The Tigers, who entered the regional ranked 10th in the state, finished sixth as a team with 29 points, while Wawasee was 16th with 17 points and NorthWood 29th with three points.

Fort Wayne Northrop, ranked third in the state, scored 92 points and away with the team title. Fort Wayne Wayne took second with 44, followed by East Noble (39), DeKalb (31) and Carroll (31).

With the top eight in each event placing, the Tigers placed in seven of the events they competed in.

Senior Arnell Frantz took fifth in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches. Seiss finished seventh at 6 feet.

Senior Jarod Leasure took seventh in the discus with his throw of 156-8. Classmate Ryan Brennan threw 144-2, but failed to qualify in the top eight.

DeKalb's Taylor Treesh won the event with a throw of 175-9. With the automatic state qualifying distance set at 159-10, six participants from the Fort Wayne Wayne Regional advanced to the state finals.

"They gave it everything they had, it's been a fun four years with these guys," Warsaw throwing coach Gary Fribley said of Leasure and Brennan. "Jarod threw two 156s and didn't get out, last year that would've gotten second."

Warsaw's third senior throw competing, Brent Satterly, took eighth in the shot put with a distance of 48-8. Satterly was the only qualifier of the Goshen Sectional to advance to the finals round of the regional.

Warsaw's only other place in an event came from junior Adam Bott, who took seventh in the long jump with an effort of 20-3.

For Wawasee, freshman Anthony Argentino took fifth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.18 seconds, while sophomore Paul Perales finished eighth in the 3200 with a time of 9:54.36.

Wawasee's 400 relay team of Eric Gingerich, Travis Klenke, Kyle Johnson and Rhett Mikel took seventh with a time of 44.45 seconds, breaking the school record of 44.58. NorthWood's foursome of Ben Lehman, Casey Yerger, Joseph Sheetz and Scott Hill took eighth with a time of 44.69 seconds.

Warrior senior Jimmy Meyer competed in the shot put but failed to qualify.
