The Cerulean Garden Summer Concert Series starts June 1 with The Vespers and opening act Anderson East at 7:30 p.m. On June 8, Kellin Watson takes the stage at 7:30 p.m., with The Farewell Drifters performing July 5 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for each of the first three shows are $10, with children under 14 getting in free.
According to Caleb France, Cerulean chef and co-owner, “Ignition in Goshen has been doing this for awhile now. They do a series, they do it year round, where they bring in bands. The two criteria are that they have to be touring nationwide and they also have to have a record label.
“So for us, to do that in Winona Lake would be an amazing opportunity to up the ante for music here. And quite honestly, there are very few places, only a few that I’m aware of, that are doing this caliber of music.”
The cool thing about partnering with Ignition, he continued, is that the bands can do a back-to-back show. A band will play one night in Goshen, and then the next night in Winona Lake, or vice versa.
“We can get better bands. They’re going to do two shows, in a relatively close area. And the market is so different from Goshen to Warsaw ... we really get to hit two different groups of people and give them great music,” France said.
There will be one to two shows a month all summer long, with The Vespers and East kicking it off.
Each of the concerts at Cerulean will be in the garden.
“We kind of expanded out into the road and we’ve got the building to seat a couple hundred people,” he said.
The concert series will be the first time Cerulean has ever done tickets. They will be pre-sold at the host desk at Cerulean, or by phone at 574-269-1226; or at the door. Tickets bought by phone will be available at Will Call.
“It’s really cool because at a lot of music venues, the food and drink really aren’t that great. For us, we already do that out there (in the garden). We got a lot of people last year who would come and get food and drink and make a night out of it,” France stated.
“Definitely need things to do in Kosciusko County.”
Ticket prices will depend on the show, he said. For the first three shows, they will be $10. After that, he said they will figure out ticket prices, but they might offer discounted pre-sale tickets.
“These same shows in Goshen are going for $15 to $18 to $20 apiece, so I think we can give a little bit of value,” France said.
Some people may remember The Vespers from when they performed at Cerulean last year.
“It was kind of the only big show that we did,” he said. “We ended up having 300 to 400 people out here.
“They’re just an amazing group out of Nashville. Touring nationally. Have an amazing record. Just really cool vibe.”
All the bands that will be performing are Americana, France said. “You go from, kind of like, a little twangy almost, like Mumford & Sons kind of stuff, Abbott Brothers. Then you get more kind of singer-songwriter-ish with Kellin Watson and things like that.”
For the first show, he said they brought in East as an opening act. He will be the only opening act planned for this summer.
“He was just in the top five of iTunes music and Amazon Prime music,” France said. “It was a really cool deal to have him come in, too.”
The first show also is set against the Winona Lake Art Fair.
As for the shows themselves, “We really want them to be about the music, which I think a lot of places – it gets a little crazy. So every ticket that we have will have either a picnic table or table or a seat that they can sit in to listen to the music. It’s not just like people just standing up everywhere and going crazy. You can really focus on the band, grab a drink, kind of sit there and hang out.”
Each band will play two 45-minute sets.
“For us, more than the crowd, it’s about appreciation of music. I think, even through our food and beverage, it’s more like the craft of it, the art of cooking and food and entertainment. So I think that this type of band, and these types of musicians will really further what we believe in and it’s the art of food, the art of entertainment, the art of music. To pare those together, I think it will be really cool,” France commented.
All ages will be welcomed to the shows.
“I know The Vespers have a really cool family following. So any age group,” he confirmed.
The shows should be over by about 9:15 p.m. The bands will have merchant tables, but no other booths will be set up during the shows.
For shows the rest of the summer, France said people can visit the Cerulean website at www.ceruleanrestaurant.com Click on “Cerulean Garden” in the middle of the first page and it will take viewers to the concert series performers, dates and times. Click on each artist’s name and it will take the viewer to the artist’s videos.
“Ignition has really helped us out and put this together,” France said. “They’re good at it. So I think that partnership is enabling us to do what we’re doing here.”
The partnership started when France and his wife went to a few shows at Ignition last year. They really got into what Ignition was doing .
“They’re very much about community, and here at the restaurant that’s one of our big focuses – how do we make this community stronger and tighter. And how do we make it a more creative and better place. ... We like to do it through art and food, and now music. And if we can add that aspect to Warsaw and Winona Lake, it’s like a great fit,” France concluded.[[In-content Ad]]
