Pike Lake Beach was not affected by a closure. Swim lessons Tuesday were moved from Center to Pike Lake.
“The health department does E. coli testing counts and they came back high yesterday,” said Staci Young, Warsaw Parks recreation director.
A follow-up test was conducted Tuesday and the results came back at 9 a.m. today that were negative for E. coli.
Although Center Lake beach was closed Tuesday, people were still able to fish and kayak, Young said.
The swimming part of Center Lake beach was closed as a precautionary measure, Young said.
“E. coli is dangerous if a person drinks the water, but not if it comes in contact with their skin,” Young said.
Young said a person has to ingest water for there to be an E. coli risk.
Young said no Warsaw lakes were closed during the 2011 swim season from E. coli.
In Winona Lake, Craig Allebach, Winona Lake town coordinator, said there have not been high E. coli levels detected this year.
Allebach said if the health department contacts the town after E. coli results come in high, the swimming area and beach will be closed.[[In-content Ad]]
