School may be about two months away, but Combined Community Services is collecting school supplies now for its "Tools for School".

"Tools for School" provides children with school supplies they might not otherwise be able to get.

CCS Director of Client Assistance Peggi Lisenbee-Wright said they had 1,500 to 1,600 children in need of assistance in 2009. This year, they expect 1,750 or more.

The supplies will be handed out Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club, 800 N. Park Ave. This is the third year for it to be held at the Boys & Girls Club. The supplies will be collected through Aug. 12.

Lisenbee-Wright said Cindi Knepper, Boys & Girls Club director, is helping again this year with the "Tools for Schools". The Boys & Girls Club is providing volunteers to help with the giveaway, and Ami Pitt is coordinating again.

Fiesta Hair is once again providing free haircuts for the school children, Stephen Possell, CCS executive director, said. Fiesta provided close to 200 haircuts last year all day long.

Possell said with the difficult economic times and unemployment, he'd hate for kids to have to feel the same hardships at school and feel isolated. By providing the children with school supplies and a new haircut, the kids can feel special and excited about school just like everyone else.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible for Tools for School, and backpacks are needed for all grade levels. The program is not for preschool students.

To be eligible for the giveaway, a person must show proof of residency in Kosciusko County. Proof can include an ID or a bill to their current residence. They also must have children in school.

The school supplies "wish list" includes decent backpacks, three-ring binders, Elmers School Glue (4 oz. bottle), rubber cement, folders with pockets, Fiskar Scissors (not plastic), crayons (box of 24), No. 2 pencils, colored pencils, large soft rubber eraser, pens (blue and black, no red), washable markers, ruler (English or Metric system), protractor, compass, waterproof school bags and notebook or notebook pager (wide rule).

Possell said besides CCS, there are many drop-off sites around the county. The North Webster Church of God is participating for the first time this year. Among the other places include Zale Drug Store, Medtronic, Warsaw Community Church, Kiwanis Club and Kosciusko Community Hospital. Possell said other churches, service clubs, organizations and businesses are participating, and any other are more than welcome to participate and collect school supplies. Barrels will be placed at the drop-off sites for the school supplies.

Possell said donations for "Tools for Schools" are appreciated. If providing a donation, the person should indicate that the donation is for "Tools for School".

The program is not just for Warsaw, but all of Kosciusko County, he said. "There are certainly needy kids all over the county," he said.

"It's a very giving community and every year the community steps up to the plate to give," said Possell.

Lisenbee-Wright said fliers about "Tools for School" will be handed out at the First Friday event down Warsaw July 3.

CCS is at 110 E. Prairie St., Warsaw. For more information about Tools for Schools, call 574-269-6019, Ext. 22.[[In-content Ad]]
