Beginning Sunday, the theme for the 36th annual Catholic Schools Week is "Catholic Schools Celebrate Service."

"The whole week is just full of activities," said Mary Ann Irwin, Sacred Heart Elementary School principal.[[In-content Ad]]Each day of the week also has its own theme. Monday's theme is "We Celebrate Learning." Tuesday's is "Celebrate Students," Wednesday's is "Celebrate Parents, Grandparents and Special People," Thursday's is "Celebrate Teachers and Staff" and Friday's is "Celebrate Catholic Identity."

At Sacred Heart in Warsaw Sunday, the activities begin with an open house at noon following church. Masses Saturday and Sunday will be student led.

Monday will feature Stevens' Puppets at Sacred Heart. Judging for the science fair also will be Monday, with the science projects on display all week.

The annual basketball tournament for Warsaw Schools begins Tuesday. Irwin said there will be a pep rally for Sacred Heart's team in the afternoon.

Ronald McDonald will make an appearance at Sacred Heart Wednesday. The spaghetti dinner and talent show starts at 6:30 p.m.

Teachers will swap classes Thursday morning. For example, Irwin said, the kindergarten teacher may switch classes with the sixth-grade teacher.

Friday, there will be Bingo and games in the afternoon. Sixth-graders will go to Mass at the Cathedral.

"It's just a huge, important celebration," Irwin said of Catholic Schools Week. "We always invite the public to come in and see what Catholic schools are all about."

Four new classrooms opened up this past week at Sacred Heart, Irwin said. The students, she said, are very proud of them. Sunday's open house will be a good time for the public to see them.

Sacred Heart's teacher of the year will be presented with an award Thursday at the Diocese in Fort Wayne. This year's teacher of the year is Monica Smith. Irwin said Smith has taught at Sacred Heart for about six years and previously taught for Warsaw Community Schools.

Sacred Heart offers full-day or half-day kindergarten. A five-day program for 4-year-old children begins at Sacred Heart in February. Irwin said they have 23 children who will take part in the five-day program, taught by Lili Polk. Sacred Heart also offers a three-day program.
