COLLINSVILLE, Ill. - Catherine Jean Batson Smith, 61, of Glen Carbon, Ill., and formerly of Rochester and Warsaw, died at 1 a.m. June 24, 2009, in her residence.

She was born Nov. 25, 1947, in South Bend, to Harry and Eleanor Lindsley Batson.

She earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from IVY Tech. She was a retired accountant and a devoted pet lover. She was a beloved mother and grandmother.

Surviving are two daughters, Vinicia "Nikki" (and spouse Larry) Schleicher, Edwardsville, Ill., and Laura (and spouse Carlos) Ballinger-Morales, Fowler; grandchildren: Brittany "Cat" Schleicher, Edwardsville; Sabrina and Rafael Morales, both of Fowler; and a fourth grandchild expected in September; her mother, Eleanor Batson, Leesburg; two brothers, Bruce Batson, South Bend, and Harry Batson, Leesburg; a sister, Nancy (and spouse Ted) Grocke, Leesburg; and a dear friend, Gerald "Butch" Wygant, Glen Carbon. She was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Batson, and a sister, Mary Ellen Batson.

A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Herbert A. Kassly Funeral Home Ltd., 515 Vadalia, Collinsville, Ill., with the Rev. Jim Donahue officiating. There will be cremation.

Calling is from 4 p.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
