HUNTERTOWN — Taking a step up in competition Wednesday, the Warsaw volleyball team was swept at Class 4A No. 6 Carroll.
Falling 25-21, 25-21, 25-21, the Warsaw Lady Tigers (25-5) had their 10-match win streak in best-of-five contests broken, while the Carroll Lady Chargers improved to 29-3.
From the start, the Lady Chargers appeared a bit faster to balls, and each time Warsaw seemed to settle down, Carroll coach Doug Helsom would take a timeout to change momentum.
“There were big points, then we’d come out and mis-serve out of timeouts,” Warsaw head coach Mike Howard said. “We don’t come out and handle the ball, and be in system. We just played sloppy volleyball tonight.”
That happened twice to the Lady Tigers in the second game.
After battling out of an early hole, Warsaw went up 14-11, forcing Carroll to take a timeout.
Out of the break, the Lady Chargers scored six-straight points, going on top 17-14, forcing Howard to take a timeout.
Later, down 21-16, Warsaw  used a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 22-21, at which time Helsom called his team over again.
And like before, the Lady Chargers responded by reeling off three-straight points to get the 25-21 victory.
Again in the third, Warsaw went up 7-3, but immediately after a Carroll timeout, got down 8-7.
Still fighting, the Lady Tigers recorded four-straight late points to cut the Carroll lead to 23-21, but as the night had gone, the Lady Chargers scored the last two points of the game out of a timeout, taking the match.
“They just outplayed us everywhere,” Howard said. “It starts with me, right? I didn’t coach very well tonight. We weren’t ready to go. They just overwhelmed us from the start.”
Making Carroll’s start even more impressive was the fact that  University of Illinois-commit Jacqueline Quade didn’t even start the match, deferring to upperclassmen on Senior Night.
Even with her on the bench, Carroll was up 6-3 by the team she entered in Game 1, and the Lady Chargers proved they were more than a one-girl show.
“It was (junior (Kate) Novack on the backside and it was outside hitters,” Howard said. “It really was just our serving, and we couldn’t play big points.”
Senior Jocie Bollinger paced the Carroll attack with 11 kills, followed by Novack’s eight, Quade’s six and senior Tatum Lohse’s five.
Novack also had two blocks and three aces.
For Warsaw, senior Katie Voelz recorded 12 kills and junior Caroline Mayer had six, while junior Jordyn Lindeman finished with three blocks and sophomore Cassie Hoag had 22 assists.
In the end, Carroll just had more weapons that played at a higher level.
“We just have to have people step up at this point,” Howard said. “It’s that point of the season where the leaders have to step up and play. We have to be more efficient. There’s no reason to be out of system and be confused about what you’re trying to do. It comes down to execution at the end of the season.”
Closing the regular season out with Saturday’s Warsaw Spiker Invitational, the Lady Tigers have big aspirations for the postseason, which begins with a match against Elkhart Central at Concord High School on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Facing a team of Carroll’s pedigree, win or lose, Howard wanted to get a feel for where his team was against some of the best.
The outcome he saw wasn’t what he wanted, while the execution in the loss seemed to be even tougher to swallow.
“If we want to go a long way (in the postseason), it’s a team we may face down the road (at semistate),” he said. “Right now, we have to go back and regroup. We have things to work on right now.”
