He was born Aug. 30, 1919, in Otwell, to Edward and Montie Whaley Sherman. On Aug. 31, 1944, in Indianapolis, he married Ruth Henke, who died Feb. 18, 1999.
A lifetime Warsaw resident, he received a basketball scholarship to Oakland City University. He earned a degree in health and science and attended Butler, Purdue, University of Chicago, Michigan and I.U. He taught high school physical education and science. He worked at Indianapolis Oil Co. as a rep.; the South Bend Health Dept.; the City of South Bend; and retired from the Kosciusko Health Dept. in 1993 after 30 years. He was a basketball coach and played pro ball for a year. He was one of the first sanitarians in the State of Indiana that was certified. He was a lifetime member of Moose Lodge (governor local Moose); Legion of Moose; a life fellowship with Moose and a member since 1947. He was a member of the Indiana Public Health Association and the Indiana Public Health Employees.
Surviving are a daughter, Carole (and spouse Bob) Tucker, Warsaw; a sister, Helen Kuhn, Okieville; two nieces; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
A private graveside service was today at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with Chaplain Bob Jarboe officiating.
No calling is planned.
