FORT WAYNE - Second-year Warsaw boys basketball coach Doug Ogle said his team couldn't get over the hump at Carroll Friday night.

As close as the game was at times - on the scoreboard at least - it looked more like the Tigers were staring at a mountain.

A team that entered on a five game win streak, Warsaw simply turned the ball over too many times and missed too many shots in the basket area Friday, falling 62-58 to the host Chargers in front of a near-packed gym on Carroll's senior night.

"In the first half we shot poorly," Ogle said. "We got good shots we just didn't make them. At the same time, our transition defense was not very good and they made us pay."

The Chargers certainly made Warsaw pay at the charity stripe, where Carroll cashed in by making 11 of 15 attempts in the fourth quarter alone.

The Tigers whittled the lead to three, 52-49, with 2:01 remaining in the fourth, but senior Todd Braddock missed both charity tosses and Carroll senior John Bates got the board.

Those were Braddock's only misses at the free throw line all night, as he finished 6 of 8 at the charity stripe, and instead of Warsaw cutting the lead to one the Tigers found themselves down five 13 seconds later as junior Deric Faylor connected on a pair of freebies.

"I thought a big play was when Todd Braddock made a steal and Carroll's kid caught up with him before Todd could score the easy layup," Ogle said. "Then Todd misses both free throws, his only two misses of the night, and Carroll comes back with two free throws. We go from maybe being down one to being down five."

Warsaw cut Carroll's lead to three points three times in the final 1:28, but each time the Chargers padded their lead with free throws.

Six-foot-5 senior Adam Griggs, fresh off a 30-point performance in last Friday's senior night win over Huntington North, scored on a tip-in with 1:28 remaining to slice Carroll's advantage to 54-51, but Charger senior Andrew Bourne pushed the lead to five with two free throws at the 1:07 mark.

Tiger sophomore Shaun Cabrera, who scored 19 points in two quarters of junior varsity action Friday, converted a steal into two points, cutting Carroll's lead to 56-53 with 48 seconds remaining but Bourne cashed in yet another pair of charity tosses with 41.3 ticks on the clock.

Warsaw junior Michael Wienhorst drilled a three-pointer with nine seconds left, slicing the Charger advantage to 61-58, but senior Blake Pond hit the first of of two free throws with 3.7 seconds left for the 62-58 final.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 14-7 heading into Tuesday's sectional opener with state-ranked Columbia City.

Carroll, now on a four-game win streak and victors in seven of its last eight games, improved to 15-5 to end the regular season. The Chargers drew the bye in the sectional and play the Columbia City/Warsaw winner Friday.

The Tigers started the game by turning it over on their first three possessions. They finished the contest with 15 turnovers, while Carroll had just 10.

Warsaw trailed 16-9 after the first quarter but cut Carroll's advantage to four, 29-25 at halftime.

The roller-coaster ride continued for the Tigers in the third quarter, and Carroll turned a 35-34 lead with 4:32 left into a 45-36 advantage heading into the final frame.

"We just didn't have enough focus," Ogle said. "Our shot selection wasn't good and we had too many forced plays on offense."

Griggs led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points, while Braddock had 16. Griggs finished with a double-double as he also had 10 rebounds. Braddock pulled down eight boards.

Point guard Michael Moore had nine points and six assists, but committed eight turnovers.

As a team Warsaw shot 21 of 47 (44.7 percent) from the field overall and 4 of 12 from three-point range.

Carroll, which had four players score in double figures, shot 21 of 39 (53.9 percent) from the field overall and 4 of 11 from three-point range. The Chargers, who were outrebounded 32-16 but never trailed in the game, converted 16 of 23 free throw opportunities.

Bates led Carroll with 17 points, while Faylor had 14, Pond 13 and Bourne 10.

"I thought Carroll was balanced," Ogle said. "They shot well and played well. They were the better team tonight, there's no two ways about it."
