He was born Jan. 9, 1930, in New Paris, to Jonas S. and Deliah Burkholder Yoder. On July 4, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas, he married Doris Wavelene Lehman, who died Sept. 22, 2002. On Sept. 16, 2005, he married Lois A. Meissner, who survives.
Living most of his life in this area, he graduated from New Paris High School in 1948, Indiana College of Mortuary Science, Indianapolis, in 1951, and attended Manchester College. He established Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, in 1964, retiring in 1984. He served as Elkhart County coroner from 1985-92. He was awarded recognition from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Dept. for his service. He served on the Elkhart County Council for four years. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1951-53. He was a member of the Wakarusa Lions Club, of which he was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. He was a member of Nappanee Church of the Brethren; Lafontaine Masonic Temple; Fort Wayne Shriners; Elks Lodge, Elkhart; Indiana Funeral Directors Association; and the National Funeral Directors Association. He was a 50-year member of Nappanee American Legion Post 154. He was a former member of RAM, Nappanee 155. He volunteered as a Red Coat at Elkhart General Hospital.
Also surviving are two daughters, Ray LeeAnn Reed, Atlanta, Ga., and June (and spouse Rick) Garner, Starkville, Miss.; two stepsons, Paul (and spouse Ann Marie) Meissner, New York, N.Y., Mark Meissner, Arlington, Va.; two granddaughters; four step-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother, John (and spouse Martha) Yoder, Goshen; and two sisters, Dorothy (and spouse Willis) Kohli, Goshen, and Esther Ritenour, Sebring, Fla. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Wakarusa, with Tim Yoder officiating. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery with a military graveside service by member of Nappanee American Legion.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
