Carl R. Bays, 73, Akron, passed away surrounded by family at 11:15 p.m. Feb. 2, 2015, at his residence.
He was born March 12, 1941, in Prestonsburg, Ky., to Sammie Bays Jr. and Dora Miller Bays. On Jan. 25, 1963, he married to Renessa Wicker Bays, who survives in Akron.
In 1962, he went to work for the Floyd County Highway Department in Prestonsburg Ky., working there until the fall of 1964 when he moved to Indiana. In 1964 he went to work for Dalton Foundry in Warsaw in the molding department. In 1965 he worked for two different hog facilities, one of which was in Hicksville, Ohio, and in 1969 he worked for Gatkes in Warsaw.
From 1970 through 1980 he worked at Clausing, where he did electrical work and wired lathes. While working at Clausing he was very involved with the steelworkers union, and even served as president of the local union. Also from 1970 through 1980 he worked as a security guard for several companies including Zimmer Inc., L&M Berry, both of Warsaw, as well as some others.
In 1980 through 1985, he worked for AMPI (Associated Milk Producers Inc.), where he managed the plant. He moved back to Kentucky in 1985, where he again worked for Floyd County. In 1987 he moved back to Indiana and went to work for Explorer Van of Warsaw until 1997. In 1997 he returned to work for Dalton Foundry, where he mixed sand for the molder until he retired in 2002.
He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Kosciusko County in Claypool.
He will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Lisa (and spouse Chris) Wine, Rochester, and Pam (and spouse Mike) Hamman, Akron; and two grandchildren, Christopher and Daniel Hamman, both of Bloomington; two brothers, Keith (and spouse Phyllis) Bays, Pierceton, and Kenith (and spouse Diana) Bays, Goshen; and two sisters, Karla (and spouse Vic) Lee, Leesburg, Fla., and Alice (and spouse Paul) Surface, Akron. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Frank and Earl Bays.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Free Will Baptist Church of Kosciusko County, 58 W. CR 700S Claypool, with Pastor Terry Bradford officiating. Burial and a graveside service is at Lake View Cemetery, Silver Lake.
Calling is from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Arrangements are entrusted to Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw.
