Car Memories

Editor, Times-Union:
Yesterday brought memories of a trip with Dad to Cedartown, Ga., to buy a new car (25 miles from our home). We paid cash for it ($325). It was a Ford V-6, 1933, with what we later called “suicide” doors (because they opened from the front). It was no surprise that 1933 was the only year “Henry” made em that way (or the weak V-6 engine with small cylinders).
Soon I was 12, and driving the car with mother (the other passenger) holding to the door handle. “Mom, why are you holding the door handle?” (Rain made the red soil into a slick muddy road).
Mother replied, “If this car heads for the ditch, I’m gettin’ out!”
“Mom, you know I’m a good, careful driver. And, if we did start sliding into the ditch, jumping out would be exactly the wrong thing to do! You’d get hurt for sure then!”
I was able, as usual, to drive the new Ford home safely that day, despite the slippery road and so thankful! (Yes, only 12 years old.) And, thankful today for the patience of Paul Berry, the salesman, for a kind heart toward us “older” people.
Yesterday was “special” in another way. We drove home another product of “Henry.” This one costs considerably more than $325! But prices on everything have risen since 1933! And, what we get is a lot more. We got a good-size book more than an inch thick describing how to operate the computed “machine.” Reminds us that we’re in the “computer age” for sure, no matter how closely we try to stay in the “lowest price-range” in things we buy.
Reminds me of a remark I made on the way home. “You know dear, riding in this thing feels just like the Cadillac we rode in with friends the other day. I can hardly believe that this computer age had done!”
But some things have not changed since 1933! The basic principles on which our country was founded, honesty, truth and all Christian principles found, front to back, in our Holy Bible. Like Matthew Chapter 5 or Romans chapters 5 and 6 (for a start).
P.S. Some have asked where they can find the DVD (“2016”). Try Walmart or Family Video, Warsaw, Both had it Tuesday.
