Gangster Al Capone has returned to Kosciusko County.

The last time he was seen around these parts was during his heyday in the first part of the 20th century. But now he's back to tell his story.

In truth, Stan Stokes is portraying Capone in a historic production at the Barbee Restaurant and Grille. Sally Hogan wrote, produces and directs the "dinner theater."

Kosciusko County Convention & Visitors Bureau Operations Manager Sharon Gosnell said the Barbee Hotel "was one of his hideouts." Hogan said in the heyday of the hotel, it was quite nice and far away from the police so Capone could hide out there. In the dinner theater production, "Capone" tells his story with his gal "Bunny" singing notable songs during the show. Gosnell plays Bunny.

For the creation of the show, Hogan did all the research on Capone's life. She said the show talks about much of his life. "It was a lot of work, I'll tell you that," she said.

Gosnell said the CVB has been showing the production to groups during the past year. CVB Executive Director Mary Kittrell said the show is part of an idea to get motor coach groups to spend more money and stay overnight.

Kittrell said the response to the Capone show has been so good that Hogan has been looking to do the show on a schedule so audiences know when they can see it. "It's become an attraction itself," said Kittrell.

Hogan said Stokes loves playing Capone. "It's given his life new purpose," said Gosnell.

The show is approximately 45 minutes at the Barbee Hotel.

The next shows are Sunday at 1 p.m. and July 15 at 6 p.m. Reservations are required by calling 574-834-1111. Cost is $30 per person. The Gangster Dinner includes dinner salad with homemade Italian dressing, chicken fettuccini alfredo with dinner rolls, peach cobbler and a drink of either soda, ice tea, lemonade, water or coffee. Alcoholic drinks are available at additional costs.

For more information about the Al Capone Dinner Show, contact the CVB at 574-269-6090 or 800-800-6090. Once the dates and times for the show are set, they will be posted under festival and events on the CVB Web site at www.koscvb.org [[In-content Ad]]
