Candidate Obama vs. President Obama on Unions

Editor, Times-Union:
I must agree with Mr. Lonnie Smith when he says President Obama has done nothing for unions, and that we cannot afford four more years of him. He should do the honorable thing and not seek re-election. But Mr. Smith is in for a big disappointment if the thinks a Republican is going to stand up for unions. Let’s look back.

I remind Mr. Smith that Ronald Reagan was known for union busting. His firing of unionized air traffic controllers and hiring of replacement workers laid the groundwork for today’s diminished worker’s rights and the demise of unions.

George H.W. Bush worked with Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to spearhead NAFTA. Democratic President Bill Clinton signed this monster into law in 1993. Bill Clinton also gave China most favored nation status. One can only speculate on whether Hillary’s paid position on the board of directors of Walmart was instrumental in his decision.

George W. Bush supported a policy that provided tax breaks to corporations that shipped jobs overseas, costing hundreds of thousands of jobs while exploding trade deficit.

Candidate Obama promised “I’ll walk the picket line with you.” Candidate Obama promised to enact the Employee Free Choice Act and renegotiate NAFTA. President Obama has turned his back on unions and working people and favors yet another job killing trade deal with South Korea, Panama and Colombia.

The moral of the story is that both parties have become so corrupted with corporate money that politicians should be listed as commodities to be bought and sold. Neither party cares about you. As soon as someone in Asia can be trained to do your living wage job for 50 cents an hour, your job will be gone. Unions should not support any candidate of either party until they do something for labor. Talk is cheap.

You also need to look in the mirror. Do you make an attempt to buy American and buy locally to keep money in the community? If you are buying Chinese-made trash and only care about your own job, then shame on you, you are part of the problem. Globalization has become the new slave plantation for the world.
