Cancer Society Recognizes Symmetry's Efforts

According to ACS Associate Director Tammy Stepien, the company's efforts extended not only to its own employees, but to the greater Kosciusko County community.
The company sponsored an ACS pilot program called "Did You Know."
"Did You Know" is a radio series played on a local radio station aimed at helping increase awareness on topics like cancer, screenings, ACS and the services and programs it provides.
Symmetry Medical is also a Five Star Investor based on the standards of ACS's Workplace Solutions Program. To qualify as a Five Star Investor, a company must meet a list of minimum standards which include a 10-week physical activity program, participate in community ACS events, include ACS newsletters in internal communication systems, providing cancer-related screenings to employees, promote tobacco cessation, giving financially toward ACS campaigns, forming at least one Relay for Life team and other volunteer, donation and awareness activities.
"Cancer has affected the lives of our employees in many different ways," said Linda Scalet, Symmetry director of human resources. "Therefore, if we can help ACS in any way, we will."
"This is important, because they are positioning themselves as a working partner of the American Cancer Society and they are putting health and wellness for their employees first," said Stepien.
Symmetry is also fielding a Relay for Life team this year. The company has had a team for the past five years. Last year's team raised more than $7,000 for ACS during the relay.
Scalet said she has been a member of some of the Relay teams.
"We have so much fun and the Luminary Ceremony at night is emotional, heart-warming and overwhelming all at the same time," she said. "I usually sponsor at least five luminaries myself which I dedicate to my friends and family members I have lost due to cancer."
Scalet said about 90 percent of Symmetry employees are participating in raising money for Relay for Life.
"Symmetry Medical will also match every cent the employees contribute," she said. "And, as usual, our employees here go above and beyond when it comes to helping charities."
Stepien said ACS values the support of local businesses.
"It's important to involve our companies and workforce to promote cancer awareness and education," she said.
