Cancer patients receive a helping hand from the Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund.

But the fund gets a helping hand from generous members of the community.

The 2011 Cancer Care Fund Gala and Auction, which is one of the top fundraisers for the fund, is set for Sept. 10.

The Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund, administered by K21 Health Foundation, provides assistance to financially-eligible residents of Kosciusko County who are suffering from cancer.

The purpose of the fund is to relieve some of the financial strain that often accompanies cancer diagnosis.

The assistance provided from the fund includes, but is not limited to, items such as rent or mortgage payments, utilities, insurance, food, car payments and prescription medications.

The Kosciusko County Cancer Fund Gala and Auction dinner, which is $125 per person, will be at the Tippecanoe Lake Country Club in Leesburg.

Hors d’eouvres and cocktails will be served at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 7:15 p.m. Dancing begins at 9 p.m. with music from the John Kirkwood Band.

There will be a live and silent auction to raise additional funds for the event.

Items in the live auction include “Day At the Symphony” tickets for eight people to see a production of “The Nutcracker” and for tea following the production at Warsaw Community High School Performing Arts Center Dec. 4, Colts suite tickets, a mega yacht dinner cruise for up to 40, a Boyne Mountain condo, four pit passes to the NASCAR  Nationwide Inaugural Race and a one-year membership to Stonehenge Country Club.

Some of the silent auction items include a NASCAR Nationwide Series Special Edition Breast Cancer Car Hood, Golf round for four donated by Stonehenge and Tippecanoe Country Clubs, Notre Dame vs. Boston College tickets and a $100 gift certificate donated by JB’s Furniture.

Photos of the live and silent auction items can be found on Facebook at Gala Kosciusko.

Anyone interested in attending the gala and auction can contact co-chairs Cindy Knafel at 574-453-7080 or Nicole Kelly at 574-265-3259.

Rebecca Kubacki, state representative, will serve as hostess for the evening.

The speaker for the evening is Dennis Dubois, who currently has prostate cancer. He and his wife, Julie, own Sunrise Photo, Syracuse.

A Hero For The Cause Presentation will be given by Knafel and Kelly. The award is presented to a person who currently has cancer or is a caregiver.

In 2010, the Cancer Care Fund provided financial assistance to more than 100 Kosciusko County cancer patients and their families.

The fund disbursed nearly $125,000 for items such as rent or mortgage payments, utilities, insurance, food and prescription medications, just to name a few.

The funds are primarily raised by a group of dedicated individuals in Kosciusko County who volunteer hundreds of hours each year to plan a number of fundraising events, such as the golf outing, gala and auction.[[In-content Ad]]
