Now Roulo not only runs her own business, The Cake Lady, she is also the in-house caterer for the North Webster Community Center.
She started out doing cakes for friends and family while splitting her time as a teacher.
When her own children got a little older she had a choice to make: continue making cakes and catering for friends and family or make a go of it as a business.
She chose the latter.
“I make speciality cakes that are not only beautiful but taste delicious,” said Roulo.
In 2010, as word of her business continued to grow in and out of the area, Roulo was approached to use the kitchen space at the NWCC.
After some thought, Roulo decided to use the space for The Cake Lady and said it’s been a perfect fit.
“There’s just so much going on here at the community center. And with it being an old school and having this kitchen space, it just seemed like a natural fit,” said Roulo.
She started at the community center in May.
After receiving all the proper licensing, Roulo hit the ground running.
She did 50 wedding cakes in 2011 along with fully catering events.
She also added hired a cake decorator, is preparing to hire a part-time cook and hires staff during the summer.
With the popularity of TV shows like “Cake Boss,” Roulo said demand has increased for her cake decorating classes.
And she said they aren’t just for women.
“I have men take the class,” said Roulo. “I have retirees looking for something to do. I have young people who have some artistic ability and want to try out cake decorating.”
Roulo’s next eight-week cake decorating course starts March 6 and runs through April 25.
The classes run from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
It’s a hands-on class where people learn to decorate, work with both butter cream and fondant as toppings, pipe borders and everything in between.
For more information on the class, call the community center at 574-834-1600.
Roulo said one of the most interesting and complex cakes she has made was a Purdue Boilermaker cake with the train and engine. It even had smoke coming out of it.
Roulo said her trademark are sheet cakes because they truly represent the flavors she is trying to achieve.
She offers 23 different cake flavors that can be found on her website, thecakeladyonline.net
Lemon, raspberry and turtle are some of her biggest sellers.
Roulo also said she does vegan and gluten-free catering for those with dietary restrictions.
“Being able to do this, to be a part of people’s big day like a wedding is a real fulfillment,” said Roulo. “The biggest compliment I can get is when I see someone whose wedding I did and they tell me that not only was the cake beautiful but people are still talking about how it tasted.”[[In-content Ad]]
