SYRACUSE - C. Earl "Papa" Hirons, 93, of Avalon Village Nursing Facility, Ligonier, and formerly of Syracuse, died at 4:48 a.m. Jan. 30, 2008.

He was born June 6, 1914, in Muncie, to John F. and Eva Monroe Hirons. In 1936, he married Lillian "Gee-Gee" Monroe, who died in 1992.

He was a 1933 Yorktown High School graduate, where he played basketball and football. He lived and worked in Muncie. He was a tool and die maker at GM, retiring after 26 years. He was a summer resident of Syracuse Lake since 1965, and moved to Syracuse permanently in 1992. He was a member of Moose Lodge, Muncie, and Eagles Lodge, Syracuse.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy L. Blade, Syracuse; a son, David E. Hirons, Muncie; a brother, Richard (and spouse Connie) Hirons, Bluffton; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Elm Ridge Cemetery, Muncie, with Pastor Kent Butcher officiating.

Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse.

Memorials to Shriners Hospital for Children or to the Alzheimer's Association.
