A decision by the Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals Tuesday puts Richard Kuhns a step closer to opening a gunsmith shop in his home.
The board approved Kuhns’ request for an exception to allow a home business in an agricultural area. Kuhns lives on Ind. 19 in Scott Township south of Nappanee.
Board members stipulated that Kuhns must submit specifications for an earthen mound as a backstop to an outdoor shooting area. He said the range would be for testing guns that he repairs and not for public use.
Kuhns also said later Tuesday he will next need to acquire a federal firearms license, a process that could take until May. To get the license he must meet requirements such as providing his plan to store the guns securely.
In the meantime he is pursuing his gunsmith training, and said he will be able to work with antique as well as modern firearms. Kuhns noted he will be able to replace or repair wooden stocks, refinish corroded barrels and improve accuracy, and repair internal parts or even produce custom parts.
He will run the shop part-time initially and focus on repair, but said he will also sell guns depending on demand.
Also during the BZA meeting, board members approved:
• a variance allowing solar panels to be installed on the roof of a building on Old 15 in Van Buren Township, at the request of LMA-HUF Development
• an exception to allow a personal storage building on Ind. 13 in Tippecanoe Township, at the request of Owen Cobbum
• a variance to allow construction of a residence approximately 40 feet from the right of way while also allowing a temporary residence on the site, on CR 575N in Etna Township, at the request of Clifford Schwartz
• an exception to allow construction of an open gazebo on a residence accessory building on Wade Lane in Tippecanoe Township, at the request of Alan Kado
• an exception allowing a home-based business for small equipment sale and rental and small engine repair for small equipment in an agricultural district on CR 250S in Washington Township, at the request of Toni Bailey.
Board members denied a variance permitting a covered deck within 30 feet of the water’s edge on Majestic Way in Turkey Creek Township, at the request of Michael and Joni Katz.
They also denied a variance to permit a detached garage to be converted into a residence creating two residences on one tract of ground, on CR 200S in Wayne Township, at the request of Eric Behling. The board recommended Behling create a duplex instead, which is allowed, and he indicated that was a better alternative than his request.[[In-content Ad]]
