Two area post offices are part of a study for review and possible closure.

Burket Post Office, 122 E. Main St., and Tippecanoe Post Office, 18436 Ind. 331, are part of the study.

Coming under review doesn’t necessarily mean an office will close. The Postal Service announced in January it was reviewing 1,400 offices for closing. So far, 280 have been closed and 200 have finished the review process and will remain open.

The Postal Service is considering closing more than one in 10 of its retail outlets, including 17 in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio, according to the Associated Press.

The financially troubled agency announced Tuesday that it will study 3,653 local offices, branches and stations for possible closing.

Many of those may be replaced by “Village Post Offices” in which postal services are offered in local stores, libraries or government offices.

During a telephone interview this morning, Lynn McKinnon, Burket post master relief, said she and Burket Post Master Brenda Wilcoxson participated in a conference call Tuesday morning with U.S. Postal Service officials.

The Postal Service officials notified the Burket Post Office officials that the post office is under review.

McKinnon said they were  informed the review will take approximately 120 days. The post office will be reviewed on criteria such as its budget and income.

She also said if the post office is approved for closure, residents will have opportunity to provide input on the closure before it occurs.

McKinnon said if approved, the closure will effect her job as well as Wilcoxson’s job, but said U.S. Postal Service officials have assured them positions will be found for them.

“The closure would be hard on Burket because we are a small community and a lot of people rely on us to meet their postal needs,” McKinnon said.

“The review does not necessarily mean a closure and nothing has been determined until the review has been completed,” she added.

She said there are currently 115 postal boxes in use at the Burket Post Office. The post office is the only place for residents in the town to conduct postal business as there are not mailboxes at homes in the town.

Greg Ellis, Tippy Post Office postmaster, confirmed he also participated in the conference call Tuesday morning.

He said if the closure is approved, it would result in him and the postmaster relief losing their jobs.

Besides the two post offices in Kosciusko County, northeast Indiana post offices in the study include: Adams County: Pleasant Mills; Huntington County: Bippus; Wabash County: Liberty Mills, Servia; Wells County: Keystone, Liberty Center, Petroleum, and Poneto.

Sites in northwest Ohio include: Defiance County: Farmer and Mark Center; Paulding County: Haviland and Latty; Van Wert County: Elgin, Scott, and Wren; and Williams County: Kunkle.[[In-content Ad]]
