Warsaw Breakfast Optimist Club is working to help keep students safe before they go back to school this year.

The club is partnering again with SafeAssured ID, Wausau, Wisc., to conduct child identification enrollments.

Optimist members will be at Edgewood Middle School, 900 S. Union St., today until 3 p.m. and Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. to enroll the students for the identification kits.

Optimist members also will be at the Boys & Girls Club of Kosciusko, 800 Park Ave., Aug. 15 from 1 to 8 p.m. to enroll students for the kits.

Fred Nieter, chairman of the project and Optimist Club member, said since 2005 there have been 1,080 students who have enrolled and received the child identification kits in Kosciusko County.

"Minutes count when finding a missing child, and having an identification kit is helpful in speeding up the process in finding a child," Nieter said.

The information collected from the enrollments will assist law enforcement and the media in finding a child if the child is reported missing.

The program is affiliated with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the National School Board Association.

The enrollment process involves entering personal data provided about the student into a computer. The parents fills out an enrollment form containing personal identification information about the child, such as birth marks and a family code word or phrase. A digital photograph is then taken for an identification card. The card includes information such as the student's enrollment date, age, height, eye color and weight.

A digital video of the child walking and talking is taken to detect the child's mannerisms.

The final step in the process is digitally recording all 10 of the child's fingerprints.

All of the information is burned onto a mini-CD and is given to the parent in a jeweled case.

The Optimist Club purchased the equipment in Spring 2005 for the kits from SafeAssured ID with the help from several local organizations.

There is no charge to parents for the identification kits, but donations will be accepted to help defray the $10 cost for each kit. Parents can purchase additional kits for $6 each. Additional identification cards cost $2.

Administrators who wish to have child identification enrollment at their school or those who wish to contribute funds toward purchasing additional kits may contact Nieter at 574-269-3447.
