Braves No Match For Squires

McNeeley scores four goals in Manchester's 11-0 win

NORTH MANCHESTER – From start to finish it was all Manchester, all the time in the Squires’ 11-0 boys soccer win over visiting Maconaquah Monday night.
The Squires had a shot on goal in the first 30 seconds of the match, and senior Braydon Sewell got the first goal of the game, off an assist from classmate Elisiel Guerrero, in the third minute.
Five minutes later, Guerrero scored off a feed from junior Nathan Self. From there Colin McNeeley, the Squires’ career leading scorer, secured a hat trick before halftime, with goals by juniors Noah Terrill and Kolten Alexander mixed in. By halftime it was 7-0 and time for a change in the plan.
Since the Squires were clearly the more-gifted team, the second half saw a blend of experienced players and underclassmen, with the former acting as coaches on the field and setting up the younger players for success beyond Monday.
Manchester coach Dave McKee said because the Squires are very familiar with him, and vice versa, it allows the upperclassmen to seize opportunities to build the program.
“We start ‘em young here. I follow kids from about the fourth grade up and make sure they know me and I know them,” McKee said.
“That’s how (the underclassmen) learn. You gotta keep some key players in there, and the key players are talking to the younger kids; telling them where to go (and) what to do. Not only are they gifted with their foot, but working with the kids.”
Twelve minutes into the second half, McNeeley scored what might be called a reluctant goal. He had shook off his defender, leaving only himself and Maconaquah goalkeeper Luke Edgington in the box. McNeeley shot, and Edgington guessed wrong in his dive.
Freshman Eric Morales also scored in the second half, and late in the game Self scored twice to secure his hat trick.
Manchester has three more matches left, including today’s game with visiting Winamac and one more Three Rivers Conference match at North Miami. At 4-0 in the TRC, Manchester is in position to take the conference title, but that’s not the only focus.
“We drew Blackhawk Christian for the sectional; that’s a top team in the state. So we’re getting ready for them,” McKee said. “Basically, what I told them was they weren’t allowed to touch it more than three times unless they were in open field. Nobody from Manchester dribbled much. It was always one, settle; two, move; and three, pass. That’s what we’re going to do the next three games after this.
“We want to win conference, but sectional is a big thing.”
