Boyd Bound For State
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
BREMEN - Warsaw sophomore Summer Boyd entered as the fifth seed in the 800-meter run in Tuesday's Bremen track and field regional.
Only the top three in each event advance from regional to state. But before Boyd ran, Warsaw coach Doug Ogle predicted she would finish in the top three.
How did he know? Because Boyd's 800 seeded time came after she ran in other races like the 1,600.
On this night, she had only one race to worry about, the 800. Ogle was right on. Because Boyd did not have to compete in any other event, she had her best time ever in the 800, 2:20.99. She finished behind Fairfield's Renee Schlabach, who won with a time of 2:17.29.
Boyd was fourth with 120 meters to go, but she passed two runners in the last stretch to make the state cut. Her time was more than four seconds better than her first-place time in the Northern Lakes Conference meet 15 days ago. And in last Wednesday's sectional, she finished just fourth in the 800.
"Summer had never run the 800 by itself at a meet," Ogle said. "We were hoping it would make a difference. It did. She cut four seconds off.
"We had her first lap at 65 seconds and the second lap at 75 seconds. The key was that strong first lap."
Boyd is the first Warsaw girl to advance to the state meet since Leslie Miles in 1995.
"I think it's possible for her to knock a few more seconds off," Ogle said. "We feel good about her chances to place at state."
South Bend Adams claimed the team title with 68 points, easily outdistancing second-place Mishawaka (41). All told, 36 schools claimed at least one point.
NorthWood and Warsaw fared the best of local teams. NorthWood took fifth with 33 points, while Warsaw tied for 13th with 16 points. Whitko placed 22nd with nine points, Wawasee 25th with five points, Triton 29th with four points and Tippecanoe Valley 30th with three points.
The top three individuals in each event automatically advance to the state meet, as do any others who beat a state standard time, throw or jump.
For a brief moment, Ogle thought Warsaw teammate Faith Gonzalez would join Boyd at the state finals.
Gonzalez saved her best for last, unleashing a throw of 110-feet, 2-inches in the discus. Her final throw put her third, and she and her coaches celebrated what they thought was a trip to the state championship. But Gonzalez's claim to third-place was short-lived, thanks to South Bend Adams' Judith Gooden. Gooden stepped in right after Gonzalez and popped a throw just over 111 feet to drop Gonzalez to fourth. Like Gonzalez, that was Gooden's last throw.
Whitko came two points away from winning the sectional. Still, the Wildcats sent seven athletes in eight different events to the regional.
But it wasn't Whitko's night. The Wildcats, who claimed four firsts and two seconds at the sectional, went home empty-handed at the regional.
Whitko coach Brian Balsmeyer didn't expect all seven athletes to advance from regional to the state finals, but he thought two could. He felt senior Heidi Hull had a chance in the shot put, and senior Amber Landis had a chance in the long jump.
But Hull finished fourth in the shot, while Landis took sixth in the long jump.
"I thought Heidi Hull would get to state, I really did," Balsmeyer said. "I was very confident in that. She threw a 39-2 in the conference meet then a 36-something at sectional. Her two best throws came at the end of the season, so I thought we were in good shape."
Hull's best throw at the regional was 34-8 1/4. Had she thrown at least 35-5, she would have gone to the state meet.
Still, the Whitko girls had one of their best track and field seasons in a handful of years. They went 9-4 overall, placed second in the Three Rivers Conference with a 6-1 record and took second in the sectional.
The state meet will be June 5 at 4:30 p.m. at the IUPUI Track Stadium in Indianapolis.
