Bowlers Trying To Defend Sectional Title

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Warsaw Community High School’s girls bowling team won the sectional championship last year.
Coach Tony Sainer is confident the Lady Tigers will successfully defend their title Saturday, when six girls teams and six boys teams begin competition at 1 p.m. at Country Lanes in Rochester.
“Last year, we won the sectional,” said Sainer, whose team is 11-2 and won the Wabacanoe Conference championship this season. “I think we’ll back that up Saturday and be back-to-back sectional champions. I have confidence in this team.”
The team is comprised of Ashley Blackburn, Amber Drake, Taylor Fouts, Victoria Fulton, Katie German, Breanna Kiser and Leigha Lindsey.
The top two girls teams and top two boys teams will advance to the team regional, which will be held Feb. 2 in Lafayette.
Other schools competing in Saturday’s team sectional include Logansport, Peru, Rochester, Tippecanoe Valley and Whitko.
“They’ve performed well as a team all year,” Sainer said of his bowlers. “Some teams are selfish, but this team isn’t like that. It really is about team. They pick each other up, and they cheer for each other.”
In Saturday’s sectional, five boys and five girls from each school will bowl two games as individuals.
Those individuals will then be seeded and compete in a team event called a baker game, where each of the five bowlers per team roll two frames each.
“If you’ve never been to a high school or college bowling tournament, a baker game is really exciting,” said Sainer. “The girls lift each other up, they’re doing chants. The crowd gets into it, and the better they bowl, the louder the place gets. It really is exciting to see.”
Warsaw’s boys bowling team, which finished in a three-way tie for first in conference action, is comprised of Chris Dausman, James Miller, Jimmy Pifer, Caden Roberts, Chris Stichter, Logan Vetor and Camden Wysong, and is coached by Kirk Wyman.
In the recent individual sectional competition, Drake and Lindsey advanced for Warsaw’s girls team, while Pifer and Stichter advanced for the boys team.
Desirea Gallaway, a member of Whitko’s girls team, is an alternate for the individual regional in Lafayette.[[In-content Ad]]
