BOW OKs WPD Request To Apply For Grant

The Warsaw Police Department will apply for a grant that will allow speakers to address family violence topics in the community.

The Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety approved during Friday's meeting a request by the WPD to apply for the General Mills Sales Inc./Hamburger Helper "Hometown Helper" grant.[[In-content Ad]]The department will request $15,000 to apply toward a keynote speaker who will address issues such as domestic violence and child abuse and its impact of victimization on communities.

The board also approved a request from the WPD to revoke the taxi permit of S. Tyrone Lisenbee, owner, operator and permit holder for ASAP Taxi Service, Warsaw.

Police Chief Steve Foster said during the meeting the WPD was called to Lisenbee's residence at 222 W. Prairie St. May 1 due to personal misconduct.

The board also approved a request from the Warsaw Fire Department to apply for a 2007 Assistance to Firefighters grant.

The grant is sponsored through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and will allow the department to apply for the Operations and Safety Program.

The grant would allow the department to develop and implement a wellness and fitness program through the Kosciusko Community Hospital's Health and Wellness Center, along with purchasing fitness equipment for stations 1 and 2.

The grant request is $31,870, of which $3,187, or 10 percent, would be the department's responsibility.

The board also:

n Approved a $1,540 contract between IWM Consulting Group and the Warsaw Municipal Airport to allow Industrial Waste Management Group LLC to perform storm water sampling services at the airport.

n Approved two requests from the Waste Water Treatment Utility department for take-home vehicles, including a Chevrolet Trail Blazer for David Henderson, WWTU utility manager, and a Chevrolet Blazer for Brian Davison, WWTU operations supervisor.

n Approved a request from Warsaw Housing Authority for a revolving loan fund payment totaling $21,695.04 at two residences, including 719 N. Lake St. and 1515 Maye St.

n Approved five advertising event contracts for the Warsaw Parks Department.

n Approved a contract for $392.50 annually between Mayor Ernie Wiggins and Sands Office Equipment Service Inc. for copier and printer maintenance.

n Approved a letter of dedication for Shadow Lakes Estates for a low-pressure sanitary sewer system.

n Approved 10 new hires for the park, street and fire departments.

Warsaw Human Resources Director Jennifer Whitaker informed the board Duane Patterson, who has served as a firefighter with the Warsaw Fire Department for the past 26 years, retired April 28 and his replacement will be announced at a future Board of Works meeting.

n Approved five travel requests for the police and fire departments.
