BOURBON - The Class A state champions from the last two years clash when Triton's girls basketball team faces Clinton Prairie in Saturday's Triton 1A Semistate.

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By years ago Clinton Prairie went 25-3 and won the Class A state title. Last year unranked Triton went 20-7 and won the Class A state title.-

Triton (20-3) and Clinton Prairie (16-8) follow the first game between Union City (14-8) and Adams Central (14-10), which tips off at 10 a.m.

To get its state title, Triton had to go through Clinton Prairie. The Gophers gave Triton its toughest challenge in the tournament leading to the state championship. Triton beat Clinton Prairie 59-53 last year; Triton beat every other sectional, regional and semistate opponent by at least 18 points.

This year Triton is ranked No. 1 in Class A, while Clinton Prairie failed to crack the top 10. But veteran coach Connie Garrett, in her 30th year, appears to have the Gophers rolling. Clinton Prairie, 9-7 at one point, has won seven of its last eight to boost its record to 16-8.

The Gophers kicked No. 5 Clinton Central out of the sectional with a 58-35 win in the championship game. Clinton Prairie did that on Clinton Central's home floor when just weeks earlier Clinton Central hammered Clinton Prairie 49-34. The Gophers followed by routing host South Newton 62-40 in the regional.

"We're not supposed to be here," Garrett said. "We're surprised we're here."

One team not surprised to be in the semistate is Triton, which held the No. 1 Class A ranking from start to finish. Triton's march through the tournament up through this game has been nearly identical to last year's.

Last year's postseason run up through this point looked like this for Triton: Triton 59, Argos 14; Triton 54, Culver Community 25; Triton 64, Oregon-Davis 46; and Triton 71, Kouts 42.

This year's postseason run has gone like this for Triton: Triton 55, Culver Community 26; Triton 72, Oregon-Davis 43; and Triton 71, Kouts 47.

Again the scores are blowouts, and the only difference among the teams is Triton drew a sectional bye this year and didn't face Argos.

The similarities are fine for superstitious Triton coach Mark Heeter, who predicted and hoped for a parallel road before the sectionals started.

"They're on a mission," Heeter said of his players.

Because regionals were played Wednesday night, neither Garrett nor Heeter had begun preparing for each other's teams as of Thursday afternoon.

"We know some of Triton's people from last year, and we've heard they are playing very well, but that's about all we know right now," Garrett said.

"Ashlee Mennen, Melissa Nance and Katie Seigfried are Clinton Prairie's main three," Heeter said. "We will spend [Thursday night] watching tape. I expect them to play us man-to-man, and I know they played a decent schedule that included three 4A schools."

Clinton Prairie's team has changed more than Triton's as five players graduated off of last year's team. Triton returns all key players except graduate Melissa Nifong.

Clinton Prairie's strength is balanced scoring with Mennen (12.3 points per game), Nance (9.9 ppg), Melissa DeVore (8.9 ppg) and Seigfried (8.3 ppg). The Gophers have won their four postseason games by an average of 18 points despite being without Mennen. Mennen has been ill for several weeks and returned to play minor minutes in Wednesday's regional.

"She has been cleared to play, but she hasn't practiced for a couple of weeks," Garrett said, "so I don't know how her legs will hold up."

Like last year, Triton has been running teams out of gyms at a frenetic pace during the postseason. Several different players can put up big numbers for Triton, including Ashli Senff (16.4 ppg), Betsy Salyer (11.5 ppg), Rachel Speicher (8.1 ppg) and Amber Feldman (8.1 ppg).

Senff and Salyer in particular cause teams problems with their inside-outside style of play. Salyer, a center, is the force inside, and Senff can score from the perimeter or drive to the basket.

"Our transition game has been a good part of our success," Heeter said.

Garrett remembers Triton's run-and-gun style from last year.

"Triton was a great rebounding team last year and very quick up and down the floor," she said. "We couldn't keep up part of the time."

On paper, the records indicate the Triton/Clinton Prairie game is the unofficial championship game, and the winner would be heavily favored that night. While Union City and Adams Central don't boast gaudy records, the team that wins that game has the benefit of extra rest since it is the first game of the day.

"The two teams feeding into the other part of our semistate," Heeter said, "it could have been anybody. There were no favorites.

"Our girls have been very good at taking one game at a time. They've not looked at the records or really who we're playing. They just show up ready to play. They'll show up Saturday worried about beating Clinton Prairie. Then we'll go from there."
