"Well, I don't really know anything about Triton at this point," said Clinton Prairie coach Connie Garrett on Thursday. "We have a tape coming (Friday), so at least we will have seen them by Saturday. At this point, I haven't even seen a roster. But I guess if we're not ready at this point it's not meant to be."

"Well I know Clinton Prairie is the defending state champion," said Triton coach Mark Heeter. "They are obviously a very good ball club."

Although Clinton Prairie is the defending Class A state champion, the road to this year's state championship will not be a cakewalk. Gone from last year's team are five seniors. Two of those seniors were starters and the other three contributed to the team with their play off the bench.

This year, the Gophers will start three seniors, a junior and a freshman. Starting guard Heather Allen, a 5-foot-8 senior, leads the Clinton Prairie squad in every statistical category with 15.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game. She shoots 49.8 percent from the field and 32.9 percent from behind the three-point arc.

Clinton Prairie will also look to Sara Jacoby, a 5'11" senior starting center, and her 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest.

Katie Seigfried, 5'7" junior guard, Tara Snyder, 5'10" senior forward, and Melissa Nance, a 6'0" freshman, round out the starting five. Seigfried, Snyder and Nance each average more than 4.5 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.

"We don't plan to do anything different," said Garrett. "We aren't going to throw anything new into the plan. We'll make adjustments that need to be made as we play.

"I'm confident in what we can do."

Meanwhile, Triton is competing in its first semistate in school history; however, the Trojans are returning several players with postseason experience from last year.

Missy Nifong, the lone Trojan senior, leads the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game, while sophomore Betsy Salyer averages a double-double with 11.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest. Nifong is the second-leading Triton rebounder with 7.3 rebounds per game. Freshman Ashli Senff adds 12.0 points, grabs 2.5 steals and dishes out 3.0 assists per contest, while Brandie Ganshorn hands off 5.0 assists, scores 5.3 points and grabs 1.5 steals per contest.

Rachel Speicher rounds out the starting Trojan five with 8.7 points, 1.5 steals and 1.9 assists per game.

"We want to make sure to concentrate," said Heeter. "We want to come out and play with confidence and poise. We just need to relax and play the game. A lot of girls played last year, so I think we will be able to hold our composure even though it's the semistate."

Since the Trojans hope to play two games Saturday, Heeter plans to change one thing in the gameplan.

"We probably will not press as much as we would like because we have to think about playing two games," said Heeter. "We'll have to play good, solid half-court man-to-man defense.

"If we can do that well, we'll have a shot at winning. We want that opportunity, that's all we ask."
