Dale and the former Phyllis Jean Sheetz were married Aug. 30, 1964, at Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Bremen by the Rev. F.G. Kuebler.
The couple were high school sweethearts, and both graduated from Bremen High School in 1961. Phyllis graduated from I.U. School of Nursing in 1965, and Dale graduated from Purdue University School of Forestry in 1965.
They lived in Lebanon during their senior year of college. Dale entered the USAF, and graduated from pilot training in Del Rio, Texas, in August, 1966. He served five years of active duty in the Air Force, and they lived in Texas twice and New Jersey during his active duty. He spent nearly three years of “temporary” active duty in Vietnam, retiring from active duty in 1970. Dale served an additional 34 years in the Air Force Reserve.
They lived in Warsaw for seven years while he helped his father-in-law, Eldridge Sheetz, manage the Warsaw Airport, and Phyllis worked as a nurse at Murphy Medical Center and Kosciusko Community Hospital when it opened. They moved to Palatine, Ill., for 30 years, where Dale became the chief pilot for Morton International and Phyllis held several different nursing positions. They returned to Warsaw in 2007.
They are the parents of three children: Brian (and spouse Jennifer), Borkholder, Duluth, Minn.; Misty Dawn (and spouse Ben) Brown, Richlands, N.C.; and Joy Borkholder (and spouse Rich Stolz), Seattle, Wash. They have six grandchildren living in North Carolina. In the past year, they have celebrated their 50th anniversary with two trips, one to Alaska and the other to Tanzania, Africa[[In-content Ad]]
