By Staff Report-
The book, "Interpreting the Psalms for Teaching and Preaching," was published by Chalice Press in August and includes the work of former students and colleagues of Davis from Grace Schools and other institutions. Dr. Herb Bateman and Dr. Brent Sandy assembled the various contributions and edited the book.
"The goal of the book is to help people in local churches to experience the Psalms in life-changing ways," said Sandy. "The book's special contribution is guidance for appreciating the affective power of poetry so that the Psalms can penetrate our heart of hearts."
In the book's preface, Bateman and Sandy say they chose to dedicate this book to John Davis because "it reflects one of his passions: to help people know God through the text of Scripture."
Current Grace President Dr. Ronald Manahan first announced plans for the book at the Grace Commencement ceremony in 2004, where, upon Davis' retirement, he gave a speech honoring and acknowledging Davis' work in academia and as a biblical scholar.
While Davis is respected as a scholar, professor and preacher of the Old Testament, he also has played a role in the Kosciusko community in volunteer service, according to Manahan's speech. Davis has volunteered in many community organizations, including board service at Riverwood Ranch, Hoosier Outdoor Writers Association, Kosciusko County Preservation Association, Kosciusko Community Hospital, MedStat Health and Occupational Medicine Center, InterCom and the Associates for Biblical Research. He has written "Outdoor Scene" columns for the Times-Union for more than 25 years.[[In-content Ad]]The book, "Interpreting the Psalms for Teaching and Preaching," is available at the Tree of Life bookstore, next to the Grace Campus, and online directly from Chalice press or other online vendors, such as Amazon.
