Of the three change orders presented Monday, the Warsaw School Board tabled two of them because the board isn't sure they are responsible for those costs.

A total of three change orders for the high school project were presented, totaling $66,677.96. The only one approved was for $0, with the cost of $842 to be drawn against an allowance for this type of miscellaneous work, the accomodation of new duct work installation.

The largest of the two change orders tabled totals $66,060.96. Joe Hoffman, of CCI, said the change order reflects the cost to repair the failed subgrade at the athletic track. Originally, the claim started at $103,568, but they got that reduced. Reductions included $7,395 for revisions to mark-ups per contract; $560 for revisions to labor rate per contract; $644 for revisions to supervision rate per contract; $8,096 for revisions to equipment rates per average of three site contractors; and $20,812 for contractor responsibility due to damage by their equipment.

School board member Chuck Sauders asked if the drainage problem around the track was finally solved. Hoffman said around the track wasn't an issue, but they are still looking at water issues on the football field. "We feel with what we've done, we've resolved the problem" on the track, Hoffman said. He said they still have severe water drainage issues around the visiting coach's box, but no problem on the home side.

"This is a goofy situation," said Dan Robinson, school board member. "The school's being asked to pay for a problem everyone thought was taken care of." He said he wondered if the site testing people should pay the change order with their error and omissions insurance. The testing company was the one who OK'd the work to proceed.

Hoffman said he will forward the testing results of the ground to the school board.

Robinson also had a problem with the other change order, which the board also tabled. That change order was for $617 to replace a sink specified in the concessions building that did not fit into the specified sink base cabinet. The sink had been delivered to the site prior to the problem being detected.

"That's not the school's problem," Robinson said of the sink. "I don't know why the school should pay for that either."

"Somebody screwed up," agreed Sauders. "Whoever screwed up should pay the bill."

Architect Mary Ellen Rudisel Jordan said they will take a look at the sink drawings and get back to the board on the issue.

School board members are Ron Yeiter, Dan Robinson, Deb Wiggins, Chuck Sauders, Tammy Dalton, Cathy Folk and Gene England. [[In-content Ad]]
